Hey everybody, I'm planning on sending in a list of reforms to my school, and one of my reforms is student-run clubs. Well, if all goes well, and this is allowed, I'm definitely planning on making a math club. I'm interested to find out exactly how they are run and what makes them exciting. So here are a few questions (they are directed at personal responses, as it's possible that activities and policies from different math clubs vary.):

(All questions refer to the math club, of course. When I originally typed all of the questions out, though, having the words 'your math club' in every question seemed somewhat repetitive.)

What's a typical meeting like?

What makes your math club meaningful/worthwhile?

Does your math club have any special events that make it extremely exciting?

Does your math club offer outreach to non-members (i.e, if they need help on a problem or can't understand a topic)?

How many times do you meet per week?

Do you have meetings outside of school?

Are students in all grades allowed to join?

Is everybody available to join (regardless of talent/ability)?

I hope I covered everything that I wanted to know! Thanks to everybody that answers, and feel free to relate some personal experiences about your math club! :)

I'll play. Our math team is also our math club so that may mean some differences. The main one is every club at my school must have a teacher to sponser it. Our teacher is the coach and he registers us for everything so it works well.

1) We work through problem sets or work on specific problems someone might have. It's about 60-90 minutes.
2) It is neither meaningful nor worthwhile but it is fun sometimes and I like math. That and I need to do something to get into college.
3) If by special events you mean competitions, then yes. We go to many competitions throughout the year.
4) No, but I guess if they wanted us to we could. No one at my school wants help. Many of us tutor outside of the club, though.
5) We meet twice a week.
6) All students that want to join are on the team because we don't have the luxury of enough math-oriented students to choose the best for the team. So yes, all students can join.
7) As said above, all students can join regardless of ability and can/will compete because we don't have enough strong math students for a full team at most competitions.

What's a typical meeting like? We meet for about an hour and work on packets that deal with the current comp. subject. If it's a particularly hard sub. our coach will go over the material.

What makes your math club meaningful/worthwhile? It's fun, especially when you win at the compitions. It also help me review past math subjects.

Does your math club have any special events that make it extremely exciting? Just the compitions, and then a banquet at the end of the season.

Does your math club offer outreach to non-members (i.e, if they need help on a problem or can't understand a topic)?
Not really.
How many times do you meet per week?
Once.
Do you have meetings outside of school?
No.
Are students in all grades allowed to join?
Yup
Is everybody available to join (regardless of talent/ability)?
Yes
