Hello I am a junior, and would like to start a club this year, plz share your advice. I have already been involved in Debate, Model UN, and Band since freshman year.
I am definitely history/humanities oriented, and would like to take a govt/international relations focus in my applications.
Should I start 1)Literary magazine, which has been inactive for many years, 2)Amnesty International, 3) Environment club,
I am genuinely interested in all three topics, but My fear is colleges may think i am not legit and am simply filling my app with throwaway extracurriculars that had no impact.
I would obi be in a leadership role, like prez, in any club I start.
Which one(s) would colleges be most impressed by, where could i make most impact?
thanks to anyone who answers!
Additionally: I am at an all boys religious high school, could starting like social justice (including environmental justice/feminism) type club give me a desirable “edginess” of sorts in the eyes of colleges?
“My fear is colleges may think i am not legit and am simply filling my app with throwaway extracurriculars that had no impact.”
Yup, I think this is how it would look.
I would be reluctant to start a club just to put it on your college applications. Also, before you start one, you should think about what the club would do. If the club isn’t going to do something useful or fun, then why bother?
^^^agree. Choose something you’re interested in and may play to your strengths. Since its a holistic review of the app, everything has to hang together. If you do well in Math and want to help others or share your passion, than your EC should showcase this. When in doubt, be interesting. Colleges see the "usual’ ECs all the time. Think outside the box. One consultant says if its hard to explain and something an adult would do, then it passes the litmus test for something ADCOMS will sit up and take notice about. Good Luck.
In the end, life is too short, and there’s never enough time, do something you enjoy.
Echoing Happy1. Live your life fully, doing what you enjoy. Your authentic experiences will translate better onto an application someday than will doing things just for an application. You only get to be a high school student once. Try to enjoy it, discovering your genuine interests and talents along the way.
