Starting a club senior year - does that look bad?

Hi! :)
So, I've always been really interested in science (mainly chemistry :) ) and participated in Science Bowl and Olympiad in middle school but had to stop once I reached high school because there was no team. I was considering starting a team for both competitions this year (my senior year) just for fun so I could do it one last time! However, one of my friends pointed out to me that it might look like I simply started a club to have a leadership position by default :/

You might ask, why didn't you start one earlier? Well, freshman year, I did science olympiad with my old middle school because they are allowed to have 9th graders on the team, sophomore year I moved to England so yeah, that was impossible, lol, and junior year I was just swamped from so much work (IB :p) and stressed out that I didn't even consider it!

I'm going to start the club regardless but just wanted some input. I've heard of kids starting a million clubs they didn't really care about just so they could write on their application they were president :/ and I don't want to come off as this type of person.

Don’t worry about what “looks good”. As long as you don’t come off as blatantly padding your app, you will be in good standing. There is nothing wrong with starting a club your senior year. After all, it IS still part of your high school career.

People grow. People mature. I know it doesn’t seem like it on CC, where people are bred from day one to be leaders of this and founders of that, but that’s the high school experience.

I moved from another state my freshman year, and I had no confidence to run for leadership positions right away. This year, my senior year, might be my best and most successful yet. I’m not worried that it’ll looked rushed or that i’m compensating for slacking earlier on. As long as you stay true to your own motives, you shouldn’t have a problem.

Thanks! That’s what I was hoping for  I may not have a huge history of leadership positions which I seems like a lot of colleges push for  but I sincerely enjoy doing the few ECs that I have even if I’m not prez :p

Now I just need to go find an advisor, some friends and eager underclassmen to join and maybe some funding by the school and I’ll be set! Science Olympiad here i come! :D

I agree with the above post. Founding a club is the best thing you can do for your app, to be honest. Of course starting earlier would appeal more to colleges, but starting a club senior year is still a huge boost to your app. Nevertheless, do what you want. Think of its effect on college as a side-effect.

Agree!
Start Whatever you feel you will enjoy and get a lot out of!
What colleges think is only secondary!(Says the girl posting on a college forum, haha.)

“Founding a club is the best thing you can do for your app”

"starting a club senior year is still a huge boost to your app. "

Considering that probably 50% of CC visitors try this route, do you *really *think it’s that unique? Sorry to disappoint you. No it’s not. The best thing you can do for your app is to get all As your senior year.

Hate to rain on the parade, but starting a club senior year is not going to be the “best thing” or a “huge boost” to your app.

On the other hand, if you genuinely love science, starting that club is a fabulous way to help future high schoolers expand their science-related horizons. If your true motivation is your passion, go for it. If you’re looking to add another line to your application, this is the wrong perspective to look at it - senior year or not. Like above poster said, lots of people will start a club. Will this really help you if you just want to list “Founder and President of XYZ Club”? No. But if you are looking for another way to develop yourself and your interests as an individual, don’t stress what adcoms will think. Go for it.
