If I started a small tutoring business during high school, where would I list that on my college application? Would it be looked upon more favorably than, say, doing cross-country for a year?

I think it’ll be seen for what it is, an item you did to put on your resume.

Doesn’t your NHS doesn’t do free tutoring? I would think elementary and middle school parents today, couldn’t approach their kids’ teachers and get a large list of proven adults who could tutor. I can easily do so in my district.

And if you successfully stood up your tutoring business, how does that differ from the retired math teacher who charges $X per hour that what you’d provide? What “business” aspect did you do? Marketing? Collection? Nothing wrong w/doing something for money – but then just list “paid tutor” on your EC list. I don’t get this “started a business” line.

But to answer your question: just put it on your EC line.

^ I agree with that. You’re not really starting a business unless you legit have a license and get through all the legal stuff required of starting an actual business.

Do it anyway if you want, however. I would say that it would indeed be looked more favorably upon than a year of cross country since a year in a sport isn’t very impressive. (Hooray for taking things literally.)
