I was looking up the UF AP credit chart today and after tallying up all of my ap classes, I figured out that if I get a 4 or a 5 on the classes I am taking this year (I am in 4 this year), then I will be coming into UF with 42 credits already done. Does this mean that academically I can start as a sophomore and finish college in 3 years instead of 4, or am I missing enough credits in certain subjects?
Breakdown-
9th= Ap human geo (5)
10th=ap euro (3)
11th=ap lang (4), ap calc ab (5), ap us (5)
12th= ap calc bc, ap enviro, ap lit, ap gov
I won’t really effect you too much. Alot of these credits may not even go towards the degree you’re trying to earn. IF you want to graduate in three you can use them to you advantage, but if you want to stay for 4 you will be able to do that easily as well.
Your standing might be beneficial in terms of class registration and other privileges, But getting a degree means meeting specific degree requirements. Find out what those are, see what you’ve satisfied and you’ll be on your way to an answer. You may find that you can do a double major or an internship, without having to stay longer! Good luck.
Thank you @goinggoing and @TheVerdict . I’m not sure about my major yet so it might be smart to just stay for 4 years. I like the idea about double majoring thanks for recommending it!
You must complete 120 hours to graduate, so 42 hours gets you about a third of your way there. But, as others have said, you still must compete the general distribution requirements and the requirements of your major. You also have to take 18 hours of electives at the 3000 level or above. Most (maybe all) AP credits would not equate to courses of that level. Your AP credits will help you to satisfy some of your general distribution requirements, but not all.
They also will boost your standing for things like parking and registration dates for classes in the future.
I took my son back for a tour over spring break, and our tour guide told the group she is graduating in 3 years. She said she is graduating at the end of spring semester, and it was from taking AP classes. She encouraged the group (all were admitted students) to do well on their AP exams. My son found a list that tells what a 3, 4, or 5 on each exam will count as.
For those of you who are at UF, was the 20 minutes that you get with your counselor in preview enough to pick your classes? I do not know what I want to major in yet, so I am scared that 20 minutes will not be enough. Also, UF seems super big and my parents said that you really need to know your major as early as possible to be assertive and get into the classes you want. Is this true?
There are plenty of sections of the big classes that fulfill the general distribution requirements (like calculus, statistics, american history, english, biology for non-majors, etc.). You won’t have any trouble getting into those classes. Your counselor will probably advise you to take several of those that to fulfill those requirements and also to take a class or two that would count toward a major that you are considering or that would just count as electives in subjects you enjoy. Lots of people don’t have a major selected right away and many who do end up switching half-way through anyway. Don’t worry about it. You’ll be fine and you won’t have trouble getting the courses that you need in four years, unless you select or change your major very late in your career there.
At Preview, you will hear again and again that UF expects most students to switch majors at least once. In fact, they highly recommend that students explore other majors in their first year or two. This is one reason freshman students apply to the “University” and not to a “college” (like Engineering, CLAS, Business, etc.). It’s also why it’s fairly easy at UF to switch majors as an admitted Freshman/sophomore (with a few exceptions).
No need to stress over it at this point! Get a sense of what classes you may want to take, before going to preview, and keep in mind that you can still change your schedule by going through Add/Drop in August.
