I’m interested in all three (so I’m not only doing it for college, though that’s a benefit), but I obviously can’t start all of them. For some context, I’m in my sophomore year. So which one do you think would be the most helpful as an EC?
Science Olympiad – Our school does not have a team. SOME of the events look pretty interesting to me, but not all. If I do this, our team would just be starting out and would be unlikely to achieve national recognition, though, and I’ve heard that it’s a pretty generic EC.
Philosophy and Psychology – These have always been topics that intrigue me. However, I’m not entirely sure what I would do in the meetings except maybe pick a topic to talk about (or print out an article of some sort for everyone). I’m not that great at leading conversations either, though I can try my best. It doesn’t lead to any national awards or recognition, but maybe it’s a more unique EC than the other two?
Animal Rights – More specifically, advocacy for farm animals. I can raise awareness and raise money to donate to charities (I’ve looked some up). I’m not vegan though because I believe it’s not a very effective way of dealing with the issue – many sources agree on this.
Okay. Only because it isn’t the boost to college that most people think it will be. If you want something to help with college, read “How To Be A High School Superstar” by Cal Newport.
I would honestly pick one that you think others are interested in.
Science Olympiad has a structure. You could talk to a science teacher to try to get an adviser. https://www.soinc.org/join/start-team
There are ideas on how to start a team. I think other students would be interested.
Philosophy and Psychology -What would you do? You don’t even want to lead it. Who would be interested?
Animal Rights: I think you could get some other student interested…but I bet they would want some hands on with animals too. Can you volunteer at the pet shelter? Have a pet food drive? Foster dogs? Raise money?
I do want to lead it, I’m just aware that I’m not great at leading conversations since I’m a bit introverted. As I said, I’d probably discuss interesting articles (I read a lot of those for fun, as well as books on the subject).
