What High School Club Should I Start?

Okay, so I am lost. My school offers barely any clubs, so I thought why not create my own. The only problem is I am undecided on what I want to create, so I figured I would ask here. I have two good ideas, but which would benefit me the most? The first idea is do a environmental based club where we could discuss topics such as, pollution, endangered animals, and how to make a difference. On top of that I would also want to volunteer at animal shelters and pick up trash in the community and things like that, I have a lot more ideas, but that is only a few of them. My second Idea is to create mock trials. I figured this would make the most sense knowing that I want to have a future in law. I do like both of the subjects, so it is not a matter on what I enjoy more.

Sorry for grammatical errors, I am just stressed that I can’t decide.

Which club would you start if starting a club wouldn’t make any difference on your college applications?

I don’t even know that, it is split right down the middle for me.

Let me rephrase slightly:

Which club would you start knowing that simply starting a club wouldn’t make any difference on your college applications?

If I did start environmental club, I think I would have more fun, but mock trials would give me more of an idea of the career that I think I want. I really have no idea which one I would want to start if the college applications had no impact.

“I really have no idea which one I would want to start if the college applications had no impact.”

I suppose that would suggest that you are either starting the club for the wrong reasons, or it is not the right EC for you.

Edited to add: Going out and volunteering at an animal shelter on your own is just as good an EC as recruiting others to do it with you.

Not saying that it would have no impact, just that simply starting one comes off like trying to check off boxes on a list.

Personally, you should focus on where you see a void you can fill and which you will enjoy more, and that’s really something only you can answer.

No it’s not the matter of the college applications mattering, because regardless of them, I would want to start one of this clubs, its the matter of knowing which one, like I said one would give me more insight and the other would be more fun.

Yeah I think I am leaning towards the environmental club then, because I believe I would have the most fun, but I do still feel like I would want to learn more about mock trials because that could tell me if law is the right career path for me to follow.

Try getting some background info such as calling animal shelters to see if they allow high schoolers to volunteer or have a minimum age etc. Does your school currently offer clubs that do some volunteer work like national honor society, key club, interact etc that. Perhaps they already do some of the same work your thinking of and join those if able.

So environmental studies /science /engineering is actually big right now. I was going to help you chose that since it seemed your voice was leaning in that direction. Plus it’s very topical right now. Maybe you can get speakers in. If you have a local college maybe grab a student or two doing this right now. Always a nice connection to your local uni…

To me mock trial has been done. You can always talk to your school about starting one but maybe not take a time consuming role. Maybe a teacher would be a mentor and would be willing to help arrange your people to go see a local law case tried?

Here is the things. First off do things that matter to you and you have a true interest /passion for. Plus fun is good! You are supposed to do that in high school ?.

Also colleges like involved kids at any role. If your involved in high school then maybe a better chance in college.
My son was part of starting two clubs in high school. Both just for fun. One was a card /game club and they played “unique” games weekly. (games from other countries) The other was a club to check out the other clubs?. Their school has a lot of clubs so 15 of them weekly would rotate and just check out different clubs. They had a blast! Again fun is good.
BTW - he’s at Michigan with like 1500 clubs /activities and couldn’t find anything that spoke to him so he and a friend started their own club and it’s been very successful. Proving out my one person theory that if your involved in high school good chance you will be involved with the community in college ?.

I think you should also consider:

  1. Which club can you get an adviser for?
  2. Which club can you get people interested in?
  3. Which club has a chance to get started and be effective right away?

For an environmental club, I think you could get people interested and have a clean up fairly easily. A mock trial would require training and someone to judge and would be more difficult.

There are so many things kids can do in real life that I wonder what the real reason is to start a club. You could take the time and go find a local cause or organization to be involved with. And yes, take a friend or two.

If you’re thinking this is some sort of ‘favor’ to your school, then find out what those kids want. It does seem your own interests are more important here.

And, “where we could discuss topics such as, pollution, endangered animals, and how to make a difference.” Imo, you need to be careful this isn’t just talking. You learn things in class, but sounds like none of you have more experience. Yet.

“On top of that I would also want to volunteer at animal shelters and pick up trash in the community.” So go do that. You don’t need to found club to get rolling.

IF somewhere in the back of your mind, this IS about college- or becomes that- just founding a club isn’t an “it.”
