Mstee, the high schools get the scores sometime in the first part of December. However, some schools don't give out the scores until January. She'll need to ask her school.

Curmudgeon,
Congrats to your D. If she is really interested in playing b-ball in college, she should get in touch with the coaches at the schools she is interested in ASAP. All programs recruit athletes for their varsity sports, but in order to get their interest, you have to let them know you are there. And by the way, athletes, even at the D3 level, sometimes get priority for merit scholarships. Very few non-recruited athletes make it at the best D3 programs.

Here's my 2 cents for schools, and quite frankly, my opinions are very parochial.

WUSTL - B-ball coach, Nancy Fahey is one of the best in the country and has a consistently strong program year after year. The team regularly goes to the NCAA D3 tournament. They had a Rhodes scholar come out of the program a few years ago. Best of all, I'll get to watch her play (we regularly go to games as do quite a few locals).

Williams - I know nothing about their women's b-ball program, but D is in her first year there (playing another sport) and she really loves it. I can see one of the biggest problems for your D would be getting there. 2 hour drive on your end, flight (more likely a couple of flights) to Albany and then another hour drive to the school. Oh yes, they also want 3 SAT IIs.

Good luck to her, it doesn't seem like she'll have any bad options.

clayleas, D has met with Coach Morse at WashU. They commiserated a while. I agree that WashU is a serious bball school. Watch out for the new girl from Florida. She's a ringer. ( With a wink and a knowing nod to the ringer's dad.)

As to recruiting, D is only interested in D3 and we continue contact with about 6 schools. I know. I know. "Times a wasting". I am having ten more tapes made now. The gremlin just has to tell me where to send them.

Curmudgeon....
my goodness.....not only is your daughter basking in glory from basketball, but it sounds like she is going thru the typical growth many HS seniors go thru...which is why ED can be so limiting... so many kids continue to grow/evolve btwn the ED deadline of 11/1 and the 12/30 RD deadline... never mind the 4/1 final decision timeline!!

my 2 cents....taking $$ out of the equation, what schools are in my top list? CalTech....it is an UG research heaven....Pasadena was quite beautiful when we visited...nice size....

I think Alumother is correct in stating that Stanford might be too large, that was also my gut..... I see her considering Stanford for graduate work......

Bowdoin has an excellent science facility.....right size, right basketball and her Texas location makes her more attractive.....they take ACT, they also have $$ for merit and need.....I think....Bates also should be considered...

Williams is top notch....their tutorial pgm (which is 1 or 2 kids for 1 prof) is targeted at a child like yours... since you are already remote, the remoteness of Williams would not be a concern for either end of the application.... ED would help her here...worth the drive... its a great school if one can get in...

Middlebury has a relatively new $100M science facility.....opened in 2000.. and they have a brand new library last year I believe.... you could fly to Philly and then to Burlington??

Berurah's son's options came down to Duke and JHU, both of which offered excellent research opportunities and $$$ ... you may want to PM with her some more about what they did for him to be considered for those awards.......

Evil Robot got $$ at Vanderbilt....

WUSL is such a hot school.....they waitlisted thousands of people last year is my recollection..... lots of Anheiser Busch $$....

Miami of Ohio is a state school, very affordable relative to some of these others, big Proctor & Gamble $$ so their facilities are also excellent....

Definitely use the Web for SAT II registrations if time is running out... even if she doesn't take the test, the cost isn't that much and the opp to take them is now almost fate....what the heck.....she hasn't been dreading it, do it as a lark almost......she has such a strong ACT that she really can't lose.....
Alumother did great research on who requires SAT II etc....it is so late here I know I am rambling, but, Macalester or Carleton are great smaller central region schools...

What I am hoping and projecting is that this news today (ACT score and basketball ranking) give your daughter the energy boost, or new life, to sustain what is left for the application process itself..... the essays appear to be the hardest thing for her....and perhaps it is because her inherent nature is not to toot her own horn?? any chance you could even hire her an essay assistant/babysitter?? someone to spend a day or 2 half days....to really flesh out what she wants to have represent herself.....on a single page of paper... build an outline of salient points....and someone to keep her company while she does it?

If she can sustain her focus, she will have excellent choices come 12/15 or 4/1.... cherish her..... she will be making a difference for a long time....

I only looked at my column for 3 or 2 Subject Tests, and missed the ACT substitution for Yale. It is hard to understand why Yale is so much more lenient than Princeton. By using the ACT, foreign students can bypass the writing requirement altogether. It seems to me that ascertaining the level of Writing should be of the utmost importance at an elite school.

Standardized Testing

Yale requires submission of the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT I) and any combina-tion of three SAT II Subject Tests, or the American College Test (ACT). If you will take the ACT, understand that Yale is one of the schools that require the ACT Writing Test wherever that option is available. For students graduating from high school in 2006, Yale will also accept the "old" SAT I or the ACT taken before February 2005. Yale is one of the schools that require the ACT Writing Test, so be sure to register for the ACT Assessment Plus Writing if it is available. (For example, the Writing Test is currently not available outside the United States.) If the Writing Test is not available, Yale will accept the ACT alone.

Bowdoin is a wonderful institution for a student who wants access to great faculty with a refreshing atmosphere provided by the Maine coast nearby. A student from Dallas gave us the Bowdoin tour and I found the kids to be very down to earth, hard-working, self-starters, unaffected, and not in competition with each other..but merit money is not there. They do offer an honors admission with a stipended study experience. Their money is need-based, I believe. Dartmouth would be a great atmosphere for a girl interested in a national draw student body with a lot of school spirit and sports enthusiasts, but again, the money is going to be need-based.
Our recent experience at Vanderbilt undergrad left us as believers that it is a hospitable but rapidly more diverse school pulling from all over the USA now with full professors in labs and classes. We lived in Nashville twice and also did grad school there...Nashville is a very inviting city (think Atlanta without the gridlock) and the school's location is wonderful. She would be in the running for merit money. The great economy adds to a lively feeling..a progressive town which many East Coasters would have to experience to "get." But watch Vandy continue to pull in applications from all over. Williams also might be just the ticket.
If she likes Duke, she is going to be competitive for admission there and at JHU for merit options.

it appears obvious that some particularly Bible savvy church-y folk believe that SAT being the first three letters of SATAN is not such an innocent coincidence. Hmmmm. We may have a scoop. Let's call up Pat, I think I have the number here on my ACT prayer towel.

curmudgeon,

I rolled my eyes when i scanned through the ridiculousness that was your first post. You've been here for quite a long time - haven't you learned anything? what exactly do you expect people to tell you? Have your daughter (not "d") apply to some top 10 schools, some 11-25 schools, and then some ok-but-not-totally crappy schools (relative to, say, HYS) like BU or something. Oh, and some state schools with decent honors colleges. Duh. You've been at this long enough to know this kind of thing.

LOL. Now THAT was funny. Thanks for the chuckle, Mark. Now tootle off to bed.

Quote: "...even if she doesn't take the test, the cost isn't that much and the opp to take them is now almost fate....what the heck.....she hasn't been dreading it, do it as a lark almost......she has such a strong ACT that she really can't lose....."

I strongly disagree with this, unless your daughter does not, at this point, intend on sending SAT scores at all. What I mean is that, if she takes the subject tests "as a lark" without preparation, she may not get scores commensurate with what she's done so far, and since they all get sent together, it could affect her overall profile. So, unless she's commited to using review books to prepare for each specific subject test (I'm assuming SAT subject tests are different in some aspects from the various parts of the ACT, tho I have no personal experience with the ACT), I think she shouldn't take them. From my experience, no matter how bright someone is (and its clear your daughter is all that!), preparation makes a very big difference. In the days when my daughter applied (6 years ago), and there was "score choice" (you could choose which SAT II scores to "release" to your score report), these tests could be taken more casually. But now, everything is on the record, like them or not.

Fixed lower retainers are used to prevent lower anterior crowding which may occur with age. It will not hold the upper teeth in place and an upper retainer is still necessary. It also will not interfere with a sports mouthguard, but depending on the original condition, may or may not be indicated. The orthodontists I work with do them when necessary, but not on every patient. The only real disadvantage is that it makes it more difficult to clean those teeth (you have to thread the floss under the retainer).

Or, you could use this strategy: Send her SAT scores out now to all the schools she's interested in and don't name any "free" schools to send to when she registers for the upcoming tests. Then only send out the new report to the schools which require the SAT2s it if she's happy with the results.

Curmudge..imagine your D is very busy with the usual senior things plus the new the happy confusion re her list decisions. She might sail in even with spotty SATIIs, but I have to recommend that she buy the books. My son, who is not a genius, prepped for each SAT II and few of his friends did. Many wish they had. The prep books are short and sweet and have one or two practice tests and should not be a problem for her since they are content based like the ACT. But recommend a couple-- or three hours prep before each one.

Xiggi, thanks for the list. I'm somewhat surprised at the UW schools, particularly becasue UW Madison takes the SAT. Looking at the list, I would be very surprised if many people apply to only some of these schools plus Princeton so as to fall within Princeton's ACT policy. Princeton should quit the charade and join Wake and the other SAT-only schools.

Audiophile--good idea...I forgot that's a way around it.

Great suggestions and congratulations to your daughter for all she has accomplished - it is impressive. What about Tufts? Play in the NESCAC league, near Boston and all that it offers for research, medicine, etc.

Most, but not all, of the UW schools on that list are two year campuses. Superior, Stevens Point, Lacrosse and Green Bay are four year schools.

What a great dilemma to be in! I agree that your daughter should be looking at some elite schools, and applying to enough scho9ols that she can compare financial aid offers. Making that change in her thinking mjay also make her more open to taking the SAT and SAT IIs she might need to maximize her options. Others have mentioned most of the schools I would have tossed out (partic. MIT, Marvey Mudd, Williams). Let me make a special comment about Caltech - they do not favor girls in the admissions process. But once admitted, they do favor girls (and URMS) when they start handing out merit aid, which they can be very generous with. Caltech is probably less attractive than MIT for kids who are well-rounded in addition to being science and math oriented, but would certainly be worth a good look. High points for size, safe location, research opportunities, and potential merit aid. Low points for not producing grads with the kind of grade point averages numbers-driven grad programs like med schools may want.

Even though she says she doesn't want Texas, also consider Rice. Nice size, nice part of Houston, good research opportunities (the medical center is on their doorstep), good value, good merit aid, sends lots of kids to med schools.

Donemom,
my only thought on taking the SAT II as a "lark" is that I actually think this gal has what it takes to do really well......and the biggest holdout on it is that she is afraid of the tests..... this is not really about underlying ability.... she has that in spades..... seems to me that this is a real approach avoidance situation..... and I say just go for it... she is VERY talented..... and a test or two will not hurt her, her grades are so good, low scores might even help her....
Audiophile,
thanks for being more specific on how to selectively distribute SAT and SAT II scores....
Curmudgeon,
love the SAT is the start of Satan.......that is a laugh out loud observation!! great that one still has one's sense of humor... must be fun to watch your daughter realize she is a "player"........
