Starting research!

Hello everyone, I am a high school sophomore who is very interested in genetics, and science to be more broad. I want to act on these interests and I was wondering if it would be to informal to contact a local professor and ask to participate in a research project he or she is involved with. I understand that I would not have a main role in the research, but I at least want to help out in some way just so I can observe. Have any of you ever done something like this? Also, I was thinking about starting my own research and asking a professor to be a mentor. I think that route is a little bit more common. Please let me know your past experiences or thoughts!!

bump, I’m interested in this too

go ahead and do it! there’s nothing you can lose. Good idea!
or if you live in the nyc area…check out the alley pond environmental center…i read somewhere that if you r a hs senior you they’ll link you up with a researcher or something.
