Starting to Decide, What Should I Do?

Now that I'm done applying to colleges, the next step will be making my decision. I have been accepted to Penn State, Pitt, and Temple. They are all in-state for me. The last of my schools is Syracuse, which I won't hear from until March. I am a prospective journalism major at each school. My problem is cost. My family really can't afford too much and I will end up paying for school. Should I go to Newhouse at Syracuse if I'm accepted or save money and go to PSU, right now my second choice. I want to be a sports writer and also have worries about money. Will Syracuse theoretically get me a better, higher paying job in the sports journalism world? What is the best option?

I would choose Pennslyvania State University- University Park

ESPN beats the crap out of the syracuse orange enough so you might get some sympathy points. just kidding.
Honestly, I would save money. I have to make the same decision right now, I choosing the cheaper.

I would honestly just save the money unless Syracuse is your top then just go for it but if you aren't sure or set between any of them then go the cheaper way.

I'm looking at the same career path as well, I'd say either Penn State or Temple because they have accredited J-Schools and are in-state for you, which = cheaper. I say that because our field has some low salaries, you have to be pretty famous to even get to 6 figures. So save as much as possible by staying instate.

Unless you have your heart completely set on Syracuse, I would definitely go to Penn State University Park. I am biased, though, as I did go to University Park. Congrats on your acceptances. Choosing betweens all of these schools is definitely one of those good problems. Best of luck.

Wait until you get your financial aid offers from all the schools, then decide.

^^^Agreed.

Wait until you get your financial aid offer from Syracuse, but it's doubtful that Syracuse will give you enough aid to make it equivalent to the value of an in-state Penn State education for you. Penn State is an excellent school; for me that would be at the top of the list right now barring a veritable free ride from Syracuse.

Do you have high stats? Wait to see what SU offers. My d was offered a large merit scholarship (I think it was $12,000 4 yrs ago). FA was good too - she received a couple grants, making it cheaper to attend than our instate (Rutgers).

I think I have a good chance of getting into Newhouse even though it is highly selective. I don't feel I'm a lock for Newhouse, but any other program and I would probably be in for sure. Because of this I don't know what my merit aid chances are. I think if I get in, I'll get some merit aid. I know Syracuse is pretty good with need based aid as well, so I'm hoping the price would be knocked down to become comparable with PSU. I am going to wait until I get my aid offers, but I just have a hard time seeing Syracuse getting knocked down low enough.

I don't want a lot of debt, but my mom actually thinks I should go for Syracuse if it's reasonable. She feels like if journalism is what I want to do, I should go for the best education to get me prepared.

jec7483, do you know anyone that majored in journalism at PSU? More specifically do you know anything about the Sports Journalism Center?

Actually, I know a girl that took classes through the sports journalism center. I think she was a PR major. She got internships for the new Big Ten Network and CSTV. She also then got a summer internship working with the Redskins. She is now in radio, not working on sports, but they seemed to get her good experiences that helped her resume for applying to, and eventually getting, the job at a radio station. I wish I knew more people that were involved with it, but she seems to be doing well. Hope this helps.

If in the end the costs are similar, go with Syracuse.

If there's a big discrepancy in cost, go with Penn State.

Thanks everyone. And thanks jec, the program looks cool but I just haven't gotten any info outside of the website. Working for the Redskins seems to be a solid plus to what the school and center can do. My goal would be to work as a writer following an MLB team, so maybe it could work out. Thanks.

Ryno, I'm sure we have some connections with the Phillies here at Temple (in fact, I'm positively aware of multiple MLB teams we have connections with).

As far as PSU versus Temple, it depends on what you want, because they're entirely different.
