State med v private med school

Would a state med school (mainly to save money) have any negative effect on finding a job versus going to a private med school?

I sincerely doubt it. It may influence where you end up for your residency and that in turn will influence where you get offers to practice/join a staff, but very, very few physicians have difficulty finding employment.

Once you’re board certified, it very rarely matters where you even did your residency, much less where you went to med school. And even if it did, state vs private would not be the way they delineated their choices of med schools. Some of the most highly regarded schools are publics = UCSF, UCLA, U Washington, U Michigan, UCSD, U Pitt, etc. etc.

Usually only if you want to work at a prestigious academic medical center will they care where you did residency.

there are state Med. Schools that are ranked much higher than most Privates (check out U of Mich.)

You should go to the med school that is best oriented in the area of your interest. You shouldn’t pick med schools based on how they are ranked. That is what you do for college because all colleges offer almost the same education whereas every med school specializes their students to a certain extent beyond the general studies.

^I am not sure where you got this info. Most do not choose Med. School for specialty. Maybe some do, I have never heard though.

For instance, given the choice between Duke SOM and Maryland SOM and the students would like to pursue primary care, he should probably choose Maryland SOM since Duke is more research oriented.

^I never heard of this type of logic, but why not, everybody is different, everybody have their own criteria, as long as you do not impose yours on others, choose whatever and however you want. Some get accepted only to one school, and they are very happy with that also. Having choices is basically a luxury as far as Med. School is concerned.

Finding a job?

Anyway…to address your concern, no one will give a rat’s patootie whether you went to a state or private med.

Besides, some publics are ranked higher than privates.
