Hi, I plan on going to college in 2014 after my senior year for mechanical engineering. I took all the math/science courses possible, but i just got a call from the schedule person. I have to pick between physics 2 and statistics. Which class will be a better choice considering I plan on going to college for mechanical engineering? Thanks (My classes will be trig/alg3, calculus, astronomy, world lit, american modern history, and statistics or physics 2. The same easier teacher teaches trig, calculus, and statistics. The physics 2 teacher is much harder with tricky labs. I'm leaning toward statistics, but not sure which is more important to help for mechanical engineering in college.)

Physics II

I’d say take Statistics. You will take Physics 2 in college (a lot of schools don’t transfer physics credit anyways, definitely not if your physics is not calculus-based) but you won’t always take statistics. Nevertheless, understanding statistics is a useful skill to have.

I dont know why you are taking Alg3/trig and calculus at the same time? I would rather substitute Physics 2 with Alg 3 (considering if u are prepared for calc).

Looks to me like a year schedule.

I’m with Neo, you will get Physics II but not necessarily statistics. I wish I had taken a statistics class.

DD1’s college has an intro statistics class as a core requirement. That class is an automatic C for many students because they can’t think in statistical terms. DD1’s roomie, a stellar student, just got her first C ever thru K-12 and college. It is not a difficult class, far from it, but it takes ‘new thinking’ to a whole new level.

It’s not the math that kills them, it’s the statistical thinking. I’d say take statistics. Phys II is definitely more useful but I’d rather have it taught by a Prof. at a college level because you’ll be using it day in and day out in Mech E.
