thanks for the infromation!!!

Hi Redlinekid,
I’m a stats major and have taken nearly all of the non-intro stats classes at UR. Rao is the program director (and stats major/minor advisor) and teaches two advanced courses - 203 (Mathematical Statistics - VERY theoretical) and 221W.
They both have a few prereqs (MTH 164 and MTH/STT 201 for STT 203) and it would be really unusual to take either of his courses as a freshman - and 221W is really for majors.

There are several intro applied stat classes - 213 is geared toward math/stat majors and is the most rigorous. There are also a few others geared towards non-majors that focus on applications for bio or social sciences, etc. I’d recommend 212/213 (and the MTH 160s/170s) as your starting point - Prof McDermott is great.

Rao is really, really hard but you will learn a lot from him. He doesn’t use a curve at all and the averages on tests are often below 60. But if you’re really passionate about statistics, it’s well worth your time (and required for the major).
