stats for scholarships

jeremybeach im sorry but there is no way you would get a scholarship to tulane with your sat score, not to hinder ur enthusiasm but im very very surprised that u were even admitted to tulane.

Well, they do say that SATs are not everything. Some kids just don't take SATs well. If he had a 3.82 uw and good recs and good essays, it's not surprising he got in at all.

jesus christ lol i'm sorry i'm not stupid (but i'm not ivy material either as seen from my lovely assortment of ivy reject letters!) ....... but um, maybe i'm not qualified for aid, but i WISH that i was (plus i heard they're giving away aid like water in the ocean.)

jeremy, just to clarify, the student who got 16k with a 3.2 uw also had these stats:
3.2 UW GPA
lots of AP classes
nice e.c.'s
2390/2400 SAT

That was a nearly perfect SAT, which is pretty darn hard to do, plus AP classes and good ec's, and probably some good recs. So the school figured this student would do well in college and is worth the risk.

I see that some students are getting nice merit awards (14k in ebolazaire's case) for transferring in. So if in the worse case you went elsewhere, you could do really well in your 1st year and might be able to transfer in with some merit money.

I'm sure you're not stupid, or you wouldn't have been accepted. My S's SATs were not great either, but he did much better on his ACT. Did you ever take that?

yep i got a 25. i thought my EC's were really good i mean brown thought they were i guess. but i guess it's not enough for $$lol. i mean the thing is it's not like my family can afford it and i'm crying that i wont be able to spend money..nopez..we could pay maybe a quarter at most...but my dad is not able to b/cof financial issues, and u of miami hasn't given me money...SO..since those are the only schools i have to choose from and they're both 40k+...this will be fun!!oh yes.

jeremy, did you receive your FA letter yet? what was your EFC? (sorry don't mean to sound nosy)

lol nah it's ok. i did not receive an FA letter yet. I DO know that my parents are not paying a lick of college..that's why i'm like AHH ! they are able to pay at most well i said that already...

Jeremybeach, I go to a very competitive public school, I had around a dozen APs, a good essay, 2390 SAT/35 ACT and was deeply involved in several e.c.'s. So I think it was more a case of Tulane evaluating the applicant as a whole, as Moonmaid said. (I also had extenuating circumstances, but I didn't mention that at all in my application..probably should've.)

However, I'm totally with you on the fact that my GPA sucks, and that it sucks even more that you have a 3.8 and didn't get merit money. Maybe you could write a letter explaining your circumstances, or send in extra recs or something?

If your family has indeed run into financial hardship, most colleges will take that into account, via the expected contribution. That forms the basis of need-based financing (a combination of loans and grants). Note: it doesn't matter that your family won't contribute (if parents could pull that off then no parents would ever contribute...so the admission folks don't pay attention to that). If your EFC is small, you'll still need to cover it, but it would be a lot less than full tuition.

But colleges do understand that circumstances change. I assume you've completed the FA application, but if not, call the offices (both at Tulane and Miami) on Monday and explain your situation.

Here is the link to the Tulane Financial Aid site, which you should study in depth over the weekend - the offices like it when you are prepared: http://www.tulane.edu/~finaid/

i hope. but isn't it way to late to apply for a scholarship? maybei could write something like this,"Dear Tulane Admissions,
Thank you for the acceptance into the university! That has thrilled me deeply. However, I am currently deciding between two universities by may 1st and i'm stuck. It is coming down to finances, meaning that i will end up choosing the college that has the better financial aid/merit aid deals. I raelize that I did not receive any merit aid from TUlane, which leaves me with one question in mind: IS there a way that I could appeal a decision for a scholarship? Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,m blah blah Jeremy.

is that inappropriate or too pushy or should i just succumb to the fact that i will be in debt whereverigo lol.

Are you sure there's nothing you can send in as a supplement? When I got rejected from McGill my senior year of high school I sent them my huge science fair paper...and got in (let's not get started on the fact that my parents still didn't let me go); but still--it's worth a shot in your case for appealing for money. Maybe some extra letters of rec or something too?

oh! now that is a good idea! I mean, I sent in "most" of my EC's and i though they were distinguished, but maybe not lol. I am going to be visiting i guessi could just hassle them i nperson lol (although everyone knows thats WAY harderto do.) oh well. maybe ill think of something.,

If you're serious about the problem of being in debt, are you not looking at some less expensive schools?

well the funny thing is...I got into schools that are 1/4 the price but they don't have the major i want. So, i don'tknow...like i gotinto university of pittsburgh but they have a really bad music dept. whereas tulane has agreat music dept! (same with miami.) so, i honestly am considering calling or something to see if there is SOME way that i can appeal...and it's not that i'ma brat and i HAVE to get a scholarship, but it's kinda likei need one, and if they are unableto give me one which is, franklh, understandable, i have to seek educatino elsewhere (SOMEHOW>)

You haven't really said whether you completed the need based paperwork, or whether your family realy has financial need, so it is hard for us to know how best to help you. If your family really can afford to pay, the colleges won't be terribly sympathetic. But if they can't and you didn't fill in the paperwork, call on Monday and explain what happened. You and your family might still have to complete it, but if you get started, you may still have time.

Also, make an appt with the FA office when you visit. They had made an error in my S's paperwork, and when he went to the office in person during his visit, they were extremely helpful.

beggers cant be choosers..ur looking at one of the best and most expensive schools in the country, you were lucky to get in, dont push your luck

Actually, it is not a matter of pushing your luck. They won't rescind your admission if you ask questions. They may not give you any more money, but they won't rescind. Of course, if you get hysterical, they may hang up the phone or throw you out of the office...

As Moonmaid suggests, meet with them - people do make mistakes. But be prepared whether you call or visit.

As to whether you were lucky to get in, at this point it doesn't matter, you're in. You obviously had something both Tulane and Miami were looking for.

i just think you should be thankful that you were even accepted with those stats..its a top school, and its expensive and unless u have the stats to get a scholarship, or the money to go there then look at some less prestigious schools

jawhawk303...my sat is the only thing that was keeping me out; you're making me feel stupid! anyways, to ct2010dad, I understand what you're saying. we filed the fafsa and all that, haven't heard too much back. And, my parents could possibly afford 1/4 of the tuiton...I am a very reasonable person, I wouldn't get hysterical. I mean, I can only do what i can do, no reason for me to get up in their faces lol. And um, jawhawk...sorry that i don't have a 2300 sat; we're not all perfect ya know.
