yea i know, but im just saying you have to be realistic

true, true. I mean, i knew someone who got into tulane with a 3.2 UW and a 3.7 W...and well i thought that was too low lol. (and...of course..they got 14K merit aid with a 1990 sat...i don't understand!)

lol it depends a lot on what school you are coming from also...some public schools its pretty easy to pull a 3.7+ where at a private school it may take everyhting someone has to pull a 3.2...so it realy just depends, colleges take that into consideration

Just FYI, the Tulane FA office says you will be notifed by April 15 if you completed your paperwork on time - which still gives you plenty of time before the May 1 deadline. Probably wouldn't hurt to call early on Monday morning just to check - as Moonmaid wrote, they are pretty friendly. And, of course, if you do visit, make sure you stop in. I think the Destination Tulane tours this month actually include a stop at the FA office if you go.

As for Merit scholarships, I read somewhere (will post the link if I can find it) these are based almost exclusively on test scores. It may not be fair, particularly to those who don't test well, but it is what it is.

Both of you are right - a lesser GPA from a tougher school is pretty significant, but a 3.8/4.1 GPA from any school is pretty good also, regardless of the test scores. In the long run, though, keep this in mind - employers won't know your test scores - but many kids include their GPAs in their resumes. If you work hard at Tulane and get a good GPA, or in a music (or any arts) program, develop a good portfolio, you'll do well

Jeremybeach - Go ahead - push your luck...they won't eat you.

Go online and fill out the FAFSA asap and see if you qualify for any need-based. Sounds a little like you need some clarification on how the FAFSA works. You can msg me if you need some help.

Let us know how it goes...I'm rooting for you!

don't push it jeremy!

I'm a first time post and am trying to figure out the grid for tulane's automatic merit scholarships (not the DHS). After reviewing this thread, it appears that a high GPA and an ACT score of 32 is the difference between the 22k and 18k. Does anyone concur with this assessment?

I've asked admissions for the criteria but have been told each case is evaluated individually. Based on the number of these they give out, I'm of the opinion that the evaluation is looking at an award grid or matrix.

I dunno, I kinda feel like such and such grades and ACT will get you one, but I think they do evaluate each case individually as well b/c my college grades were def. not good enough for the 14k.

Nope, they won't eat me, BUT they did give me a 16K/yr merit scholarship. SO, yeah, that just goes to show you that EVEN WITH an 1860 sat and "such sub par" credentials, I too can get a merit scholarship! So, anyone who thought i couldn't, HA! take that lol.

Jeremybeach - Big Congratulations!! I told you they wouldn't eat you. By the way, what did you end up doing to get the aid? Did it just come in your FA offer letter or did you contact them and appeal?

hi collegemom4,.

Actually, I was done for a visit and my admissions counselor (Faye) -- who was really really nice and not fake like a few of the "pep rally" people were -- told me i could submit my new sats that weren't in the system. And it was like the 4th day there and she left for some place, so some other nice adcom took her place and calculated everything out. Meanwhile, our cab was waiting for us in the airport, and, ironically enough, i gave her my cell--so I had just put the last suitcase in the cab and was getting in when she said "WAIt! I have news. you will be getting a letter that you got 16k per year." and my mom and i cried lol. i know it's pretty lame i don't cry often but i was REALLY happy (and i got a lot of looks. oh well) I really wanted a scholarship somewhere. and at least it was to my top choice :P

How exciting!! I was just telling my husband that I may just need to get on a plane and go meet with someone in person because it's been too difficult to do over the phone. You may have just proven my point! Again, congratulation!!!!

haha! I'm glad i could help you out! But yes, putting a face to someone is definitely easier than doing things over the phone; it'll be fine :P

22K
3.9 weighted
2150 SAT

Further proving that you must ask in order to receive. Well done Jeremy!
We were kind of in the same boat but Tulane apparently saw something we didn't and has taken very good care of him. S had Tulane as his "reach" which we kinda/sorta agreed with. What the heck do parents know?
Live 'n learn.
Again....CONGRATS my friend.
I hope our son gets to know you over the next 4 years.

You all have given me courage to ask. 3.5 GPA; 4.4 Weighted, 1340/2040 SAT and lots of ec activity. what's the harm?

haha i got 24K with a 3.43 and a 1350/2080 -_-
My SATs have since improved but still, thats some luck right there :)

Either 22 or 26k (don't remember) with a 3.95 UW GPA, 2040 SAT and 33 ACT

my s received an acceptance on 15 november.
he was awarded the 24K scholarship w/honors admission.
he has since rewritten the SAT because his scores were not great.
cr600/m680/w700.
his grades are excellent and he has taken his schools toughest courses.
still, i'm wondering how they accesses his creds.
he might have listed business as his strongest interest. . . .
and we had visited the week before.
and he applied early.
anyone know how this all works?
