status change yesterday

I already have beeen accepted but have been waiting for my brother to hear.
We have very similar stats. Anyways, his status changed as of Jan 3rd. Did
anyone else have a change? I wonder if this is a good or bad sign being it was right after break.

How did his status change? My d's says the same thing: "Your application is being reviewed......
she submitted her material back in september and hasn't heard anything though one kid from her school has. her stats are
V. 740
W 760
M 660

but her GPA is about 3.2 due to weak freshman grades

i have not have a statud change yet

Got my acceptance letter today. Status changed on 1/3/07

Are the ones who status changed PA residents or out of state? also, what did the website say to let you know your status changed?

Doesn't matter. They do not consider state residence in admissions process.

IndianKate ... were I betting man, I'd bet on your daughter's admission. What College/program??

I just checked. Not only hasn't my status changed, I still get the message about the admissions office being closed until Jan 3.

My status changed yesterday. Says a decision has been reached and I'll be receiving it in the mail in two weeks.

My daughter continues to get that same message.

Whistlepig - i hope you're right. She goes to a rigorous private school where it's tough to get As, but i'm not sure an admissions office reviewing so many applications takes that into account. Fingers crossed.

oh, in answer to WP's questoin: she's applied to the department of social sciences (first choice) and then interdisciplinary studies (second choice.) she basically isn't sure what she wants to study.

She's a slam dunk, 2 pts. Congrats in advance. She'll hear within a few days.

they do consider state residency, thats why it is a state school

WhistlePig is correct that they do not consider residency in the admissions process. While most state schools do, we were told in an admissions info session at PSU that they do not.

That is correct. It's on their admission website as well. They LIKE those out of state tuition bucks.

It's one of those oddities that Penn State politicos like to use. On one hand "we're private and don't really need to listen to Harrisburg" and on the other "hey, we educate more than all the state U's combined in PA so give us more $$ H-burg." Cake and eat it too. lol

Also, the Board is constituted of some political appointees (ag societies, industrial groups, miner's unions (Rich Trumpka was on the Board for along time), governor's political cronie paybacks) and others who are U. appointed. Almost always it's the latter group who wield the real clout on the Board because they're the one's who give the real bucks. Bill Schreyer (Honors College), Ed Hintz (Alumni House), Mike Farrell, etc., etc. The others are most often "tolerated."

While being designated as PA's land-grant U, believe it or not, PSU is chartered as a private institution ... Farmers HS ... and is one of 5 higher ed programs in PA (Lincoln, Temple, Pitt, U. Penn Vet School are the others) that is in a category called "state-related." They are not governed by the PA Commonwealth, unlike the 14 state u's (Clarion, Slippery Rock, IUP, etc.) but do receive funding.

And it's this fuzziness that allows ... so far ... for them to argue that JoePa's salary (and others ... mostly faculty) need not be known to tax-payers. While it makes no diff, it'll be interesting to see how the courts rule on this. A classic case of seeing how many judicial/political strings the PSU powers will be able to pull. I'd not bet on "justice" being done in this case.

Just to add more confirmation that PSU does NOT consider state residency, we need to remember that the Common Data Set is our friend. Check it here, section C, "Freshman Admissions" paragraph C.7. "NOT CONSIDERED":
http://www.budget.psu.edu/CDS/Campus.asp?AY=20062007&Location=UP

My status changed on 1/3, and I received my letter today (1/6), and I was accepted to UP. ;)

its, funny because, on the app they ask for a second choice, but i dont put one, because if i dont get into UP, i just wont go becasue then besdies UP penn st sucks

most state school says they dont care where you from when applying.... however, once arriving at psu, i noticed psu was more generous wen accepting instate students.... also if you live near university park, you can get in with around a 900 on the SATs because it doesnt make much sense to send them to a branch campus... two kids on my floor were "townies" and they didnt last long.
