So looking ahead, it looks like I am only going to be able to go home over Winter Break. Is this common among students? Do many people stay at Cornell during Thanksgiving and Spring Break or it the campus pretty dead?

The campus is very quiet during Thanksgiving and Spring Break…but there are students who choose to remain on campus, for whatever reason.

You typically should also be able to make friends who may invite you to their home over break, as well. I invited some of my Cali friends home from time to time.

I live in FL and I stayed here for Fall Break, and went to NYC with a bunch of friends for Thanksgiving break.

yes people go to NYC or Canada during breaks

some join their friends at home

while others have a chill time on campus (nothing like being able to finish your favorite tv show during break non-stop ^_^)

Thanks everyone!

it is actually really nice to stay around when no one is here. some also take a shopping trip to syracuse in addition to going to nyc and canada.

are there any dining facilities open during breaks or is everything shut down

The dining facilities are closed, but Cornell does host a Thanksgiving dinner for those who remain on campus during that holiday.

HILC also is often more crowded… but I have brought people home with me over multiple breaks! And there are always people who stay, and things to do.

I think it is so great that people on the East Coast are willing to take friends home! Shows a lot about the students of Cornell.

I brought a friend home for Thanksgiving twice. It was a lot of fun, especially when I brought my San Diego friend home. I think she had culture shock :)

you will find that if you cannot get home, you will have a friend who will take you in for thanksgiving etc.

you will have a lot of friends from diverse backgrounds, which can sometimes lead to great opportunities, like a cheap trip to nyc, to a ski house in vermont or colorado, florida, cali, etc etc where you will just have to chip in on gas or a cheap ticket and wont have to worry about expensive lodging. just keep your ears open.

What about fall break? Isn’t fall break like 3 days? Do people go home for three days and come back?

The people who live close enough that traveling is not terribly expensive or time consuming do go home for three days and come back.

well most people dont have a ton of class on friday so they go fri-tues, or sat-tues. i usually went to dc, nyc or home on fall break. most people dont travel too far.
