Steinhardt junior/transfer/Welcome Week Leader who wants to help!

hii! i just got accepted to steinhardt for music performance, like the other day! i’m going to be a freshman next year, but, probably like many others, my main concern is that going to nyu is very expensive, and i won’t be able to afford it without a ton of finaid. =/

i haven’t gotten any news on finaid yet, since i learned that i was accepted from one of those accepted student day invitations, but what’s your experience on the financial situations of most nyu students?

@ohboi

goddard is part of the residential college. you have to apply to be put in goddard. i stayed there last summer and LOVED it. you’re right on campus, it’s amazing. i could hear live music in the park from my window. my room was quite small, however. and i could see how that could be a problem if you don’t like your roommate. the bathrooms are kind of grimy and industrial looking, but with a fun shower curtain and a rug, it should be fine.

i’ve been in some parts of rubin, but i’ve never been in a room. it’s non air conditioned and it used to be an old hotel. when i ask people about it, they find it adequate.

i haven’t been in 12th street. it’s the newest freshman dorm, so i guess it should be pretty nice.

@silly

how it works normally is that if you take the housing offer, you’re GUARANTEED housing for four years, so long as you never “break” the housing contract. (you can’t live off campus one year, then decide to come back.)

i actually don’t know how it works for LSP, but i assumed it would be the same. i would call NYU housing (google it) and ask them specifically. all the people that work there are students, and it’s a legitimate question.

sophomore all live around Union Square, usually.

for your first year, i don’t think you can request.

every year after that, you get a virtual “lottery card”. this lottery card is your placeholder in the system. say you have a friend, Jane Smith. if you want to be in charge of picking the room, you put Jane on your lottery card. you and her are in the system together. you can have up to three other people on your lottery card. you’re not restricted to LSP people, you can put anyone you want on it.

when your time in the housing system pops up (you get a billion emails before it happens) you sign onto NYUhome and you can see all the available rooms. you look at the descriptions, pick the room and VOILA! you have a dorm room.

@fredeka

what do you mean by “financial situation”?

NYU finaid is terrible. i don’t know why it’s so bad, but it is.

this is a heartbreaking decision for some people, but you really have to sit down and think whether NYU is worth all of the debt. you can apply for scholarships and petition for more finaid, but on the whole, NYU is pretty stingy. but i’ve heard of some miracles, of people getting a ton of aid. but it doesn’t happen often.

there’s a mix of people here at NYU. some take out a lot of loans. some are just kind of rich and pay for NYU upfront, and have real designer bags and iPhones and vacation in exotic places. some people are coming here on college funds that were saved from birth. a very small population are like me, whose parents work in a university that will pay for NYU (my dad is a professor in another NYU school).

for some majors, i’ll go out and say that NYU isn’t worth it. but for music performance. . . NYU is a well known name, and Manhattan is a good place to be if you’re a musician. i’ve heard some of the ensembles here, and they’re incredible.

just really sit down and think about it.

@silly

i’ll admit, a lot of times that i’m on here, is when i’m bored during lectures. heh.

missamericanpie, thanks.

but what exactly is a residential college?
and I know what you mean about the bathrooms. I’ve seen rooms in Goddard, Rubin, Wienstein, and Hayden before but for some reason they showed me low-cost rooms in Rubin and Hayden, the Goddard room was a showroom so I doubt it would be that good, and the Wienstein room was wayyy too cell-like for me.

Question about finaid.

For some reason my brother was automatically enrolled into the stafford loan back in freshman year, and we had no clue about it. no problem, my parents just paid the loan in full last month.

How would I prevent that happening to me? Is there something I need to do with the bursar’s office?

Hi! I recently got accepted to Steinhardt as a media, culture, and communications major and I’m really interested in hearing what you think of the program, your experience in Steinhardt, NYU in general, the relative difficulty of landing an internship at notable places like Vogue or Chanel, or other magazine publications/fashion houses, as that is the type of industry I want to get into.

Also, do you think the school is worth it in terms of the type of field I want to get into, because I’m pretty much deciding between nyu and usc ( print journalism major)

I’d appreciate ANYTHING you can tell me =]

and feel free to PM me instead!

thanks!!

Do you think NYU is worth it for its Creative Writing program? I want to apply to Gallatin as a Creative Writing/Film major.

hi everyone. i just got back from my spring break vacation (it’s spring break here on campus) so i’ll answer all of your questions as soon as i can, i swear. (plus, i’m still recovering from st. patty’s. . .)

@yale

i’ll definitely write something up for you when i’m not so crazy exhausted and whacked out. i have a ton to say and i want to say it right.

@sansri

call the financial aid office and explain it to them. look for the number on nyu.edu but the office won’t open until 9am Monday- spring break is a university wide holiday.

@radio

my roommate is in gallatin for creative writing, and she loves the program. gallatin is a good fit ONLY if:

a) you are very motivated and self-disciplined
b) you are persistent
c) you’re absolutely sure you don’t want to pursue a more specialized degree

if you really want to break into tv/film writing, i would urge you to apply to Tisch. only because Tisch is an amazing program for tv and film students; the internships alone would make your knees go weak. while Gallatin is equally respected, the Tisch name carries SO MUCH WEIGHT in the industry. and film is one of those industries where it really makes a difference as to who you know.

@sansri

actually, financial aid might be open. my bad. like i said. . .my head is a bit fuzzy.

It’s alright. I’ll call them up, and if they’re closed I’ll tell my brother to drop by when he’s on campus on Monday.

hi missamericanpie
i hope that its ok to PM you!
i have sort of a long question / complicated situation so i didn’t want to post it here.

Could I apply to Tisch as a double major in dramatic writing and creative writing? Or a major in dramatic writing and a minor in creative writing?

Thanks!

you only apply as one major. then you declare the other major when you enroll in the school. that goes for any college, not just NYU.

bumping because i sure as heck don’t want to work on my take home final for Video Games class.

im surprised you got rejected back in 2005. your stats are slightly higher than mines except maybe SATs are a bit lower. ironically my strength is in math which is my major. my weakness is gym, which i doubt anyone cares.

looking back, it was probably my sloppiest application. did it online, first application, rushed it. ugh. lots of little mistakes are what cost me. the CAS psych major probably didn’t help, when i had no previous psych classes.

i ended up getting into 5 SUNYs (including Geneseo’s B.S/DO program), Rutgers, Wagner (small LAC near NY), Pace and three CUNYS.

why did you go to CSI? Rutgers and Geneseo seem a lot better in terms of academics and resources.

btw i didn’t do much on my nyu application. i applied to Ivy Leagues (MIT, Harvard, and Yale), NYU CAS, Rutgers New Brunswick, and Baruch. got into everything but the Ivy Leagues. all reaches except Baruch which I expected a sure in. I guess my average and SAT scores was too low and my F in gym was pretty bad. Acceptance to NYU (ironically no LSP) and Rutgers was a bit unexpected.

hahahahaha. i come from a medical family and i DO NOT DO NOT UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES EVER want to go into medicine. Geneseo said that i had to spend one year in the B.S program before i could transfer to another major.

my parents flipped and refused to pay for any school BUT Geneseo.

i was broke, so i went to CSI.

i don’t dwell on it much. i got into NYU, eventually.
