Hi and thanks for answering. Did you take Intro to Media Criticism? How is the class–difficulty, workload, interesting? etc.? Do you recommend taking it as a first semester freshman or should I wait?

i LOVE intro to media criticism. if song chong is teaching it, TAKE HER SECTION, she’s a wonderful PhD student who teaches in the department.

it really sets you up for the rest of the major. it teaches you how to, well, critique media, which can be harder than it sounds. i use everything i learned in that class in most, if not all, of my upper-level courses. whether it’s video games, war media, advertising or youtube videos, the course teaches you how to approach media from all sides. i highly recommend taking it first semester. i would hold off on intro to media studies, that brought down my first semester gpa because it’s really boring.

the class varies depending on who’s teaching it. when i took it, we watched a ton of tv shows and clips. the textbook is written by a prominent professor in our department and it’s really interesting. it does alter how you look at media forever, hah.

my two papers in that class were about the tv show “my so-called life” and the video game “world of warcraft”.
