Stellar UF class sees drop in diversity, transfers

As UF starts its fall semester today, UF President Bernie Machen has labeled the freshmen class as the university’s most talented crop ever. UF’s entering class earned an average high school GPA of 4.18 and SAT score of 1293, both record-high levels.

“We could, because of quality, take a lot more students if the resources would allow us,” he said.

Machen said the university has sought to maintain economic and racial diversity. But despite a rise in the number of black applicants, preliminary figures show the number of admitted black students fell by about 200 from last year.

Tomslawsky, looks like you got what you were hoping for!

Uh oh! Where is SSobick to add his gloom and doom for SFC transfers? It seems as though cuts will be spread among FTIC and transfers equally.

Before Tomslausky & SSobick get started again people need to to face the facts that the SAT portion of the USNWR = 8% of the total score.

UF is already tied for tenth (10th) amongst it’s competition to become a top 10 state school.

Per USNWR 2008 edition:

SAT 25-75% rank / Value 8%

Overall Rank / State Rank/ School/
38/ 10t /UW-Madison/ 1200-1360
38/ 10t/ UIUC /1160-1360
38/ 10t/ UC- San Diego/ 1140-1360

49/ 17/ UF/ 1140-1360/ same/ 10th tied

44/ 13t/ UT- Austin/ 1120-1370
44/ 13t/ UC- SB /1090-1310
44/ 13t/ UC- Irvine/ 1080-1290
48/ 16/ PSU /1080-1280
42/ 11t/ UWashington/ 1070-1310
42/ 11t /UC- Davis/ 1030-1280

FACT: UF has higher SAT’s than UT-Austin, UC-SB, UC- Irvine, PSU, UWash and UC- Davis.
ALL these schools however are ranked higher in the 2008 USNWR than UF.

There are other higher valued categories that are keeping UF down.
Will post them once I have finished my analysis.

The funny thing about all this is that the business school is at an all time easiness to transfer into…I love it

Do you know why it’s like that right now? Seems kinda odd.

Well, I don’t know about regular students, but I am speaking about transfer students.

I could be thinking the reqs are too easy, but I dunno, seems simple to me. 3.0 overall gpa, and a 3.7 pre-prof gpa?(Business Calc, Fin Acct, Managerial Acct, Stats, Macro, Micro, Computers) That allows you to get 2 Bs, or one C in all of those classes!

And that is for a GUARANTEED transfer acceptance!

But yeah, no idea why.

UF now has 49.7k students. I hope the Undergraduate student body drops below 27,000 in the years to come. In addition, the Graduate & Professional Students should raise to 22,000. This would be a perfect combo in my opinion.

I’m currently a business student at UF and I have to say that I feel programs such as this guarantee to transfers meeting criteria devalues my degree. I do believe that those who put in enough work at another institution should be able to transfer in, but to state a definite GPA, and a relatively low one at that to guarantee a transfer into one of the best business schools in the country just doesn’t do it for me. I don’t understand why the university would take that action at this point in time.

I don’t really understand it, however, since it benefits me, can’t say I mind either. I could totally understand this if they set the standards at like a 3.5, or a 3.7 overall GPA and a 3.75 Pre-prof GPA, but, I agree that the overall GPA is too low.

On the bright side of that, most people will not be able to get a 3.75 in the seven classes of Stats/Business Cal/Macro/Micro/Fin Acct/Managerial/PCs, even though they are cake at a CC.

I’m sure they will adjust policy for next year after the numbers come in, but we’ll see.

Edit: One thing I believe they looked at for these numbers, were the previous AA transfer applicants. They have a good idea of what pool of Pre-Professional GPAs apply, and they probably understand that if you have a high pre-professional, chances are that you will also have at LEAST a 3.5 overall. I’m willing to bet that the stats of the AA transfer admits won’t be too different than the past classes.

3.75 in pre-professional classes are no cake walk (even if it’s a CC).

In the long run less CC-transfers will be coming to Warrington. --Mark it down
