Hello, I am a current junior and I want to get opinions about this program I am currently proposing to start.
So I am a social justice and equality activist who goes to a predominantly black high school. I am also a black female interested in math and science as I plan to major in mechanical engineering when I go to college. I am in the process of proposing an idea of a STEM club based around 6th grade girls and minorities in my district. I am certainly aware of the lack on representation of this demographic in the STEM world and I am deeply passionate about getting girls and minorities into the stem field. this program will be held once or twice a month with different stem activities introduced to these middle schoolers. I just wanted to know if it is a good idea and if it as a stellar ec in the college process especially for the ivy league schools. Thank you!

It’s certainly a good idea, particularly because you’re passionate about it. Anything can be a stellar EC if you make it that way. If you build up the program to one that’s well known in your area, that could become a “hook” in college admissions.
Thanks so much, I really felt like I was lacking in the EC department. I am nor interesting in math or science competitions like the Olympiads, nor did I want to do research on a high school level. I feel everyone on this website has crazy ec’s but I want to stick to something I’m passionate about. Thank you.
How much information you know about STEM?
I know a good amount why? But I’m trying to do physics based experiments like building things out of sticks and chemistry projects and having guest speakers etc… I also want to do some bio and environmental labs and all of the AP science teachers want to help contribute.
.
It’s an awesome idea! Look into Girls Who Code and Black Girls Code too. You might be able to start a club next year through Girls Who Code. Black Girls Code would also gladly help you out.
Thank you!
