Step By Step Instructions For Letters of Recommendations

Can anyone please give me one?

Like, what exactly do I need to give to my teacher, when do I need to give it to them by if I'm applying for ED, EA, RD, etc.

Also, say I'm applying to 6 schools. Each school wants 2 LOR, and since I want to major in say business, would I have my business teacher write 6 different LOR? Or would I find 12 different teachers...I mean I guess I could tell him to write one and just photocopy it....right?

Also, do teachers usually let you see the letter they write?

Thanks.

Read the “ask for recommendations” stickie please. It’s very helpful.

I had my kids write letters to the teachers they wanted to do LOR’s for them that gave the teachers a brief overview of what they planned to major in and why, what EC’s they had participated in out side of school, and anything else they thought the teacher should know to write knowlegeably about them. The letter also included a deadline for completion of the LOR that precedes the application deadline. The kids then took the letter with them to ask the teacher if they’d write them a recommendation and took the letter out to hand them when they said yes. (Obviously they wouldn’t have taken it out had the teacher said no, but hopefully you wouldn’t choose someone who would say no anyway.)

For the Common App, they included the teachers’ email addresses in their contact info so that the teacher also got a request directly for the Common App. For the schools not on the Common App., they gave the teachers blank forms with stamped addressed envelopes.

About a week before the early deadline (if the teacher hadn’t already mentoned that they had mailed the LOR) they stopped by and asked the teacher if they had had a chance to write the letter or if they needed anything from them to write it.

My kids checked the “I won’t ever see this” box on the form, so they never saw their LOR’s (except from the guidance counselor, who showed it of her own accord). And photocopies are fine, but your teachers will already know that without being told.
