My school has block scheduling, so the fact that I’m taking 5 APs over the course of High School is really really impressive for our school, since it’s impossible to take as many as other people do at their schools.

I also expect my recommendations to be strong (one from my Creative Writing teacher/Literary Magazine guy, and one from the French Immersion teacher who has known me since I was 5).

Writing my essay on how reading with my dad when I was younger has influenced the way I think, and has made me want to become a writer to help give other people the same feeling I get when I read something beautiful, etc, etc.

Just one person's opinion-
Reach-Northwestern, Middlebury, Williams (even if you apply ED)
Match-Vanderbilt, Bucknell, Lafayette, Wake Forest, Colgate, North Carolina
Safety-U Mass, UConn, Gettysburg, Rhodes, Elon, Denison, Tulane

Your list is all over the place. Do you want a university or a LAC? Do you want an urban location or not or doesn't it matter? Several of your choices are relatively conservative and frat-oriented. Do you want that?
Have you visited these schools? Do you care how many other Jewish students are on campus? I think that you should weed down the number of schools, based on your answers to these questions.

Wow, that's totally off the first page already. Bump.

My Opinion
Match- Vanderbilt,Lafayette.Wakeforest, Colgate. Tulane,Bucknell
Reach- Northwestern, Middlebury(very competitive)
Safeties-UConn U MAss,Rhodes,Elon,Denison,Gettysburg

Williams (ED?)
UNC- Chapel Hill (EA)
Vanderbilt

UMass- Amherst
UConn
Bucknell

Elon
Wake Forest
Northwestern
Denison
Colgate

williams and northwestern would be reaches.

here's some advice for your extracurriculars: you have a million of them! it's great to be really involved in your school and community, but if you say in your application that you've been involved with 15 different activities, admissions officers will think that you're barely involved in any other them, you're just joining a bunch of random clubs to bulk up your resume. don't send a laundry list of activities that you've only done for 1 or 2 years. instead, pick 2 or 3 areas that you're really passionate about and have spent a lot of time on, and write about them. for example, you might write about how much you love 1) sports, 2) working with kids, and 3) languages. once you establish that you're really committed to those things, you can elaborate. talk about how long you've been involved in physical activities, and then include your karate, tennis, and varsity letters. then talk about working with kids/peers and explain being a camp counselor, babysitting, and working with "best buddies." when you put it that way, it sounds much more impressive than just saying, "i was a camp counselor for one summer, and i babysit." then talk about your "love of languages" and detail your studies in french and your writing awards.

i'm not trying to play down all your accomplishments (you've got a very impressive list!), just pick your angle and focus on a few specific things you've done for a long time, rather than a ton of things that you tried once or twice. incidentally, my school also has "best buddies," and i think it's a great program, so congrats on doing that.

you should be just fine at U Mass, U Conn, tulane, and probably elon (safety schools). colgate and vanderbilt sound like good matches. good luck!!!

Williams (ED?): Reach

UNC- Chapel Hill (EA)

In no particular order...

Vanderbilt: Match
Middlebury: Reach
UMass- Amherst: Safety
UConn: Safety
Bucknell: Match
Lafayette: Match
Gettysburg: Safety/Match (not quite safety)
Rhodes: Safety
Elon
Wake Forest: Match/Reach
Northwestern: Match/Reach
Denison: Match
Colgate: Mathc/Reach
Tulane: Safety

Hey we are applying to similar schools. best of luck in your college process!

chah-bump.

Look, the test scores are great, but the GPA is only 3.4 UW--you are expecting quite a bit with the first four schools on this list.

Williams--Reach
Northwestern--Reach
Vanderbilt--Slight Reach to Reach (how are people getting match for this school?)
Middlebury--Reach
UMass- Amherst--Safety
UConn--Safe Match
Bucknell--Match
Lafayette--Match
Gettysburg--Match
Rhodes--Match to Slight Reach
Elon--Match
Wake Forest--Slight Reach
Denison--Match to Slight Reach
Colgate--Slight Reach
Tulane--Slight Reach

Left off UNC--Chapel Hill (OOS)--probably Slight Reach. Your ECs are great and the test score, too, but the lower GPA hurts you as does out-of-state status.

I think if you were in-state, you'd probably get accepted, but OOS, it's a slight reach, IMHO.

Thanks! Bump
