Does anyone know where Stephens dorm is? The website is very unclear and only says it is part of the Crueger Village. It does not appear on the list of dorms with descriptions.

I suspect that Crueger, being relatively new is featured in the pictures with the other parts of that “Village” being less architectually interesting.

Thanks.

Ah..to answer my own question now that I have seen the dorm and my son has lived in it for a few weeks...

The verdit from a paying parent's perspective is...what a dump! The rooms look like they should be singles not doubles and the dorm itself looks like it should be torn down. There is a very good reason why it is not described or pictured on their website or in the various marketing materials.

Naturally son doesn't much care and is having fun (courses, people ,etc...) so that is what counts....

So, where is it? My D (also enjoying Bard despite an intense workload of her own making) is in "The Trees" which are nothing more than double-wide modular homes sectioned into seven bedrooms with an "interesting" arrangement of three bathrooms and four showers. Some of the older modulars in Kruger seem ready for tear-down and I'm sure that's a long-range plan, after Bard recovers from the expensive Science Center. What's the deal with Stephens?

It is right next to the "trees" and is another of the "trailer" dorms. Our kids have the same level of accomodations it would seem. All I can say is that I lived in various dorms for 7 years and these are the worst I have ever seen.

My son said they would be torn down someday too but that may one of those "somedays" that is a long way off. Let us hope for a good housing lottery number for next year. I think it would be very isolating to live off campus around there as you would probably have a bit of a drive to campus.

To be fair, there are some other nice dorms at Bard and every school has its clunkers.

Your S's must be one of the old "trailers". Those with tree names seem to be only a year or two old temporary housing. Beat up like you'd expect a college dorm made of sticks to be but still not nasty. The older ones between the "Trees" and the new Kruger dorms do seem pretty old and "weathered".

That is correct. He told me today that the trees look good compared to his.

Yea, its not all the dorms. Cruger Hall is like a hotel. Manor has its own nicer cafeteria etc.

I was a student at Bard for a semester last year. I was assigned to Stephens but when I went to move in with my parents my dad was pretty apalled by the living situation in Stephens and got me switched out. Stephens is a trailer, one of the trailer dorms that was used during World War II to house Europeans who came to Bard to study and escape war. I knew a number of people in Stephens and they pretty much hated it. The only people who seemed to not mind it were the ones who partied all the time. One thing that my dad didnt like about it was that it didnt lock from the outside and anyone could just walk in so it wasnt very safe. Also the rooms are designed to be singles but they manage to stuff two people into each room, and trust me- it is wayy too small you are basically living on top of eachother. When i was at bard the bathroom in stephens one day just gave and totally caved into the ground. Also, while i was there another of the trailer dorms collapsed one day, luckily no one was injured, but still, you get the point. There are some very nice dorms at Bard but some crappy ones as well and the unfair thing is that everyone at Bard pays equally for housing regardless of where they are living. If you've been assigned to Stephens I highly encourage you to get in touch with the guy in charge of housing (Ginsburg i think is the guy's name..) He won't budge right away but after my dad basically telling him that if i didnt get switched out of Stephens I was going to leave Bard he finally moved me into an open spot in a much nicer dorm.

Yes Stephens was quite a dump. He ended up with a single so says it wasn't so bad. He is in Robbins this year which looks better to me though certainly not grand.
