stereotype help

Okay. I'm that typical booksmart kid who doesn't party (strict parents) and I'm really worried about adjusting to college. I'm afraid I won't get invited to parties and will get left out of stuff. I guess what I'm wondering is, is Cornell any different from high school? Does anyone else have this parent problem?

not everyone at cornell is hard core party goers.
im guessing as long as you (yourself) are not socially secluded, you'll have friends and get invited to places.
after all, how are partys fun if no one attends them?

don't worry a bit. Cornell is nothing like high school, HS was just terrible with corny parties.

don't worry about getting left out, for the first few nights on campus, just tag along with other people on your floor as they "go out". You won't have any trouble, just don't dress in a tight plaid shirt that you've had since 3 tucked into some skinny jeans. And be outgoing as well, you'll always know somebody who is going out and usually people will gladly invite you along.

My parents were really strict too, but this is college, you're your own man! The freedom is a little daunting at first, but you'll get used to it. Just don't drink 10 cans of beast your first night, bad idea.

PS - where in CNY are you from?

Baldwinsville, 15 minutes northwest of Syracuse (about 1 hour 20 mins from Cornell--another issue, since I want to actually feel like I'm going off to a college that's different from here)

and was the plaid shirt thing for girls or guys? im a girl (so, it shouldn't be an issue for me--lol)

ah, b'ville, home of the diner, the crawfish platter at wacky wyatts and home to where my father grew up (to be more exact, the unfortunate name 'downer street'). Travel down 31 (admiring the Budweiser factory), right onto 57 and travel another 2 miles and you'll get an idea of where I'm from.

Don't worry, going to Cornell isn't like going to SU (where I went for a year). Although it's only an hour and a few away, Cornell will feel like a totally different place to be. It even feels different from when I visited with my parents.

" and was the plaid shirt thing for girls or guys?" i assumed for a guy, sorry, but actually the same thing holds true for the shirt, but disregard the comment about the jeans. My only point was don't dress like you've never seen civilization before.

haha--I actually took a little mental journey there. I live by the retro mcdonalds, near the 690 exit (complete other side of town). i never thought about downer street like that! what are you majoring in?

nice, i used to go there after tubing at van buren park (i think it was the golf course to be exact) when they had the Big Mac sales (this was maybe 5-6 years ago). My friends and I used to always tear down the safety tape and bomb down the big hills. Sometimes it hurt, but it was always worth it.

I'm a senior now at the school of industrial and labor relations.

O man college is definitely a big step up from highschool! I feel like I'm acting more like myself than ever before. Since there isn't that one "Cool table" you don't feel like you have to adjust urself for anyone. You WILL find people who you fit in great with if u just try.

BE OUTGOING!!! I can't stress that enough. It will definitely help you make friends and it will make everythingggg easier.

Not everyone drinks in college either. Of course lots of people do tho...I mean it is college. But if anything u can just start easy and drink a couple beers while getting adjusted to the whole life. You don't have to be blackout drunk to have good times at parties. Just let your hair down and chill out and you'll have a great time.

Once u find ur friends it's great. College life is like wat highschool never lived up to being. There's always friends just a little walk away and u can stay up w/ friends all night if u want. Everyday can become a great day just because u can hang out w/ ur friends whenever u like. Ur not in this alone and u always have people there to support u who are within walking distance. College is DEFINITELY a great experience!! (o...and there is some homework and classes involved every now and then ;) )

wow gomestar, i guess u really do know what im talking about. yeah, there's that one big hill...good times

lol; thx figgy

I want to go to college. NOW.

:)

yeah, i have for the past three years... i guess now that it's coming up, im freaking out (in typical human fashion)
