Stereotypical Asian Junior Needs Advice

it's really that Indian*

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patel#Distribution_of_the_name_.22Patel.22

"It is estimated that over 60% of motels and hotels in the US are owned by Indians, of that one-third have the surname Patel."

-roflllllllllllllll

Patel is VERY Asian.

Patel is by and far the most common Indian last name. Really sux...Anyway, please, someone give me something constructive...Is JHU at least a possibility?

wow you're not kidding! you are one typical asian! you'll be fairly competitive at the schools you chose. I was expecting to see a ridiculously ivy-heavy list, pleasant surprise...maybe you're not that typical afterall...

you have a great chance even though you're stereotypical.

Check the SAT II requirements for the schools that interest you. I haven't come across any that want to see two science SAT II. Usually one of them has to be Math, and the other either science or history/literature, depending on what type of program you are applying to.

Well, my above post might have offered a little constructiveness.

Anyway, colleges aren't supposed to discriminate based on race anyway. CCers often forget that. It won't be your race that ultimately decides your admission.

Thx all. I'll try to keep up with the activities and do as much as I can next year. Hopefully, by the time application season arrives, I'll feel fairly confident at my ideal schools. Thx again.

The stereotypical Asian goes to a pretty decent college so I wouldn't mind being a stereotypical Asian.

I really slacked freshman year and tried a bit harder sophomore year, but still didn't give it all that I could.

LOL!! How is that being a “stereotypical Asian student”?

***Rigorous GPA System (90%-94%=A-, 95-100%=A, and AP Weighting is +.5/ Honors is +.25) *Here's the bad news: My school is changing the system to make it easier starting my junior year and the new system won't be retroactive. I'm afraid this is going to artificially boost my GPA and discourage adcoms... (New System: A=93%-100%, AP Weighting is +1/ Honors is +.5).

Rigorous my ass. I come from Fairfax County where 94-100 is an A and 90-94 is a B+. We get .5 for APs and 0 for honors.

My son's school: 90-92 B+; 93-95 A-; absolutely nothing for AP or honors, and that goes for the rank calculation as well. His graduating class had kids with no honors or AP ranked higher than kids with 3.9 w/8 AP classes.

urg i got obvious indian names too.

Midmo, is your son's school competitive? and private or public? that sounds like a horrible system.

^^^It is a college town public, in a town with no private high schools. So, the students are very mixed in every regard. Lots of free lunch kids, lots of professors' and doctors' kids. Lots of AP (my son had 12, but most take none), along with a lot of remedial courses. School is large, 2100 in grades 10-12.

The grading and ranking system is appalling. Starting this year, under a lot of pressure, the admin. has agreed to change the grading scale, and A- will go to 90 now. However, they refuse to alter the unweighted ranking, so kids with very easy schedules will continue to graduate far above those with honors and AP classes.
