I am definitely applying to NYU and am trying to decide if I should apply as a business or chemistry major. I would love to go to Stern and I think I am pretty competitive for it, (33 ACT, IB diploma programme, good GPA and rank, highly competitive public school) but I haven't taken calculus. My IB course-load is tremendous and I wouldn't have been able to take IB HL Chemistry (a double block class) and continue on varsity dance team (also a double block) while taking a math class and still satisfy the requirements for my IB diploma. So, I took this math track:
8th grade: Honors Algebra
9th grade: Honors Geometry
10th grade: Honors Algebre II
11th grade: Math Studies IB SL (a combo of review, stats, precal, and calc)
12th grade: No math, but 8 class periods (7 is the usual maximum, but I come for an early 0 hour due to my circumstances. Most seniors take 4 or 5).

Do you think this will affect me greatly in regards to Stern admissions (or business school admissions in general?) Should I apply as a business or chem major?

You really need calc for business and chemistry

You might want to call your regional admissions rep. Maybe you could take the course online or over the summer?

Hi carolineh95, I am an international applicant from Canada. I had the opportunity to attend an info session meeting about NYU in September and it was undoubtedly helpful. Stern is the school that I’ll be applying to, and I asked a heavy amount of questions about Stern. The admission director told me that since Stern focuses on business, the admission office would love to see you taking as many quantative courses as possible. Which, pretty much means having as many maths as possible. I’m unsure about the requirements for Chem, but Calculus is a prerequisite to most of the Canadian universities’ business programs as well.

Like what lightingmom mentioned, you could try to take it in the summer, but I think i’ll be too late since you won’t get the credit on time (before the deadline), unless you are given legitimate excuses.

Anyhow, narrow down your mind to one major and go with it, you’ll always have a chance if you APPLY.

Hope that’s helpful and GOOD LUCK :)

NYU prefers that all students take math every year of high school. They prefer to see the 5 major academic subjects every year (math, history, science, English and foreign language).

This is especially true of Stern. Even for Music Business students who take Stern courses, my older daughter was told that they look to see good grades in math every year and prefer that students take calculus.

Obviously, there are exceptions to everything. Younger D was accepted to NYU with only 4 years of math (she dropped pre-calculus junior year and took College algebra senior year.)

However, she was accepted as a studio art major, so we are talking about very different criteria in terms of admissions.

I think applying to both Stern or CAS as a chem major might be adversely affected by you not taking calculus. But since you have taken 4 years of science, your odds of being accepted into CAS may be greater than Stern.
