I know there have been some threads on the stern curve already but majority of them seems to be answered by current or former stern students or the thread is a bit dated.

Stern seems very competitive as is. average sat of 1443 along with a curve to increase the pressure. So how cut throat are the classes? How difficult are the classes itself?

If you mean how difficult the classes are in terms of, what grade am I going to get?

This is how the breakdown of Stern is: 25% get A’s, 40% get B’s, and the other 35% get C’s or lower.

The grading system is a product of the ultra-competitive environment, so to answer your question, I think it’s the tests itself rather than the class material that makes Stern so hard.

I’d amend those percentages a bit. Per the official posting of the Stern curve (I’d give you the almighty link that’s oh-so-hard to find but when our website got redone last year the link is now invalid), it’s more accurately: 15-25% can, not will get A/A-, 50-70% B+/B/B-, and 5-25% C+/C.

Directly excerpted from syllabi:
“Following departmental guidelines, the course will be graded on a curve with an approximate grade distribution of: 10% A, 10-15% A-, 10% B+, 50-60% B/B-, 10-15% C+/C/C-, 0-10% D/F.”

Basically, it’s designed to reward only the uppermost few, which you’ll find very closely resembles the world of business. It’s grade deflation, which hurts a bit for recruiting, but the name brand is excellent so it evens out.
