Stern vs. UChicago

All right all right, I know it's kind of late to be making a thread like this, but...

I can't decide! I visited both and had different impressions, so... I just don't know.
I had a better first impression of NYU surprisingly enough, but I know that UChicago is lauded as a better school for my intended major, which is economics. What would people recommend? Would I forever be hating myself if I chose NYU over Chicago?

I’m in Stern and I know a lot of people here who chose Stern over UChicago. Yes, UChicago has an excellent econ department, but NYU’s is really good as well. I think it boils down to what you want to do later on. If you want something purely liberal arts, then UChicago. Stern, however, IS a business school, and I don’t think you’ll regret coming here if this is what you want to do.

Also, consider job prospects…at UChicago you will attract more job offers from the Midwest while Stern you will mostly be getting Wall Street jobs.

Go to UChicago, it trumps NYU in Economics.

Go with your first impression, plus NYU is way better with giving internships and such, especially for your major.

I guess there’s just really big cognitive dissonance going on; uchicago is almost usually ranked over NYU for econ but I liked NYU better. But what if I wasn’t impressed by Chicago because I visited on a bad day or something? I dunno. Now I’m kind of wishing I hadn’t visited anything just so it’d be easier to send in a deposit and suck it up later, heh.

I don’t know if this is really a deciding factor, but I visited both and liked NYU more by a mile. I was looking for a school in an urban setting, but I hated UChicago. It just seemed depressing and looked like all work and no play. That’s probably just speculation, but that’s my opinion. I don’t know about which program is better, but if I had to pick purely based on where I would enjoy the most, I would choose NYU without a doubt. If you’re pretty much 50/50 between the two, then maybe you should think more about where you think you’ll have a better time, considering the fact that that’s a fairly large component of your overall college experience.

NYU has one of top ten economics departments and two tracks to choose from. UChicago also has a top-notch economics department. but really if they are both top ranked, it should be much a big difference.

CAS and Stern have separate economics departments I believe.

If you are going for a theory route in Economics and plan on going to graduate school and eventually a PH.D, i suggest you go to UChig. However, if you are the type who wants to work after 4 years of college, pick NYU

I had friends at UChicago. They felt that their quality of life was terrible, and those who had majored in econ hated the completely theory-based approach, which meant they were taught econ devoid of context. I can vouch for the latter point, as UChicago-based econ theories creep into my law studies, and I absolutely despise them. On the other hand, my friends in the econ department at NYU (granted, in CAS) love the department and constantly rave about it.

at least you can switch between the theory and policy track at NYU

Chicago ftw

Its very simple. NYU-Stern for undergrad and then Uchic for grad. NYU is the place for 18-21 year-olds and Uchic has the best Grad business school in the country (yes, it IS better than Harvard’s). So yeah… That’s how it is.

Just wondering, what did they love about the department? I’m an econ major and my experience is that most of the professors are ****. Most of the good professors teach the principles classes. After that, very few good professors at all. Just remember that the econ department is ranked so high due to the research, not the teaching capability, so to make a more accurate assessment you should sit in on a few classes at each school.

Just FYI, Stern and CAS share econ classes.

I’m in nyu stern and IMO the decision boils down to this:

Go to uchicago, nyu just isn’t as good.

Everyone has different reasons, but very few people I know actually like NYU. Also, the econ majors I know say the program is no good. On the other hand, I have several friends at Uchicago, and they love it. Plus, Uchicago’s econ department is the best there is. I chose nyu over Uchicago, and it was the wrong decision.

My friends actually loved the professors, the availability of classes, and the general approach that the department took. I really think it depends on how you prefer to delve into overall subjects. I knew people who loved the politics department because it was so heavily theory-based, but that’s the reason I DIDN’T like it quite so much.

And, by the way, departments at every school are all ranked based on the level of research done there, so it’s not like UChicago will somehow have better teachers just because it’s ranked “higher.”

Again, I bring up a point that seems to be the exact opposite of what madrespek said: that pretty much all of my friends loved NYU (except the bureaucracy, of course) and everyone I’ve ever know who went to UChicago hated it utterly and totally. I’m not even talking a few people but a sizable amount who just through the quality of life there was terrible. For them, it didn’t matter if their school was supposedly “better,” but that they literally did not enjoy any of their four years there on account of not only the administration (which, oddly enough, they thought cared nothing about students) but also the general area.

Essentially, though, it all comes down to where each student feels best. For some, it’ll be UChicago. For others, NYU. But relying strictly on numbers that are pretty much calculated nearly at random and often heavily manipulated will just harm you.

NYC > Chicago
