Should I go to Stetson University or Furman? I was set on Furman until I heard that it was preppy, conservative, and lacked a party scene.

I don’t know anything about Furman but I Stetson is a nice school especially know for their business, education and music programs. If your looking for a party scene Stetson is probably the better place to go since most of their students join a fraternity/sorority and it’s a big presence on campus. They typically have something going on every week like parties, charitable events & other student activities. Deland, however, isn’t a very lively place so there’s not much of a night life.

I would suggest you visit the Furman campus if possible and judge for yourself. It is never a good idea to make a decision based on the opinion or generalities of others. Furman has its share of preppy students, all colleges do, and it may lean a little more conservatively than others but it is balanced. There is a social scene, particularly if you go Greek, any there are parties. The city of Greenville, however, is amazing and offers a ton of nightlife options for students.

I do not know much about Stetson but Furman has exceptional academics. Good luck in your decision!

theres another thread dedicated to partying at Furman.

Furman is a stronger college IMH and biased opinion. In my day, our “new” President came from Stetson and he and his wife gave Furman a great chapter including Furman’s exit from the Baptist convention and all the perils therein.

I think you will get a stronger education at Furman. Greenville is a very amiable, prosperous and happening southern city that is an asset to Furman. I think you may be underestimating the impact of a Furman education particularly if you are interested into being in a strong position for graduate school

Interesting choice of schools-both of my parents were Stetson alumnae, and having grown up in Florida, a number of high school friends graduated from Stetson. Both of our kids, now rising seniors at Furman, were offered substantial scholarships to attend Stetson, but chose Furman. Their reasons were the size of Deland versus Greenville, the academic reputation of Furman and the campus.

I will admit they were tempted to attend a school that is less than 45 minutes from the beach, but felt Furman was the school that offered more of what they wanted. Greek life has been major part of Stetson since after WWII, so if Greek life ( including houses) is important, then Stetson is the place. I think you will find more diversity at Stetson, if thatis a factor. In the end, it comes down to (IMO) what type of environment and study load you want. The communities, the weather, etc. are very different. Good luck with your decision.
