I’m a bit puzzled on how the total cost of Steinhardt can be less than the direct cost of Tisch. Shouldn’t the direct cost (room, board and tuition) for both be the same since they are both NYU?

@weski2, Pretty sure the number on this list is the direct cost of Steinhardt and not the TC.

The difference is not the room and board which is the same no matter what division you are in, it’s the tuition charged at Tisch vs. Steinhardt.

I know that Drew University is not an MT school, but if you want to add it $61,000 (tc)

Here’s an interesting article from the NY Post, about overseas schools being more affordable then many colleges in the US:

<a href=“Overseas-college discount”>http://nypost.com/2014/08/16/overseas-college-discount/</a></p>

My son will be starting his MT course at RCS (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) in just a few weeks. The program is 3 years to get his BA. I’ll let you know how it all works out!

Great point, SU88BFA. And so exciting for your son! But a caveat:

Overseas colleges are more affordable mostly if you don’t qualify for need based grants here in the US. My D goes to a school for less than our in-state university because of their generous aid.

For us, having my son go to LAMDA is a sizable expense as internationals qualify for much less aid than UK citizens (understandably). This is just important for everyone to understand going in. They do have FAFSA based loans. Also, housing can be challenging. This isn’t the case with RCS since they use Liberty Houses at least the first year, but many UK programs do not have housing. This means you have to arrange your own housing. For us that means we’ve had to pay 6 months in advance for housing, which is typical for international students. This means you have to have cash outlay going in as the housing deposit is due before the loans are disbursed. You will also have to factor in airline costs, which will vary a lot depending on where you are in the states.

But I definitely agree that overall, the UK colleges can be less expensive than US colleges especially if you wouldn’t qualify for need based aid. Even if you do, sometimes US schools do not come through with need based aid.

Very telling article by Mary Anna Dennard on Huffington Post. CC won’t let me link, but google the title I Got In! And Then I Dropped Out" and you’ll find it.

I also started a thread about an idea I have to create a national service corps (similar to Teach for America) for performers.

You can find the thread at <a href=“Idea to create a national service corps for performers - the time has come - Musical Theater Major - College Confidential Forums”>Idea to create a national service corps for performers - the time has come - Musical Theater Major - College Confidential Forums;

If you think this is a good idea too, please sign and share the petition.

Thanks CC parents and students – the stories I’ve received on the petition in the first 24 hours are so moving.

Mary Anna also had an article with “Sticker Shock” in the title and cited this CC thread.

my son is a sophomore and his accepted letter award has $40,720. which is direct costs. The also offer very generous merit scholarships which brought the price down considerably.

Forgot to mention his is at Baldwin Wallace

The University of Utah’s estimated and direct costs for OOS are pretty spot on. Little less for books, but that is offset by transportation costs. All students who enroll for summer sessions receive in state rates regardless of state of residency. My daughter stayed for both sessions this past summer and is now a resident of Utah.

Fast forward to sophomore D’s first bill as a sophomore was $5490 for tuition. She was awarded a scholarship for this year as well. Lives in an apartment off campus and it’s about the same cost as living on campus but without the crappy food! Books for freshman year were about $150 total (only one gen ed since she had most of hers covered by AP credits). Sophomore year books are more, about $400 so far. Vocal pedagogy and the theatre history books were expensive.

Overall she is very happy with her experience and training thus far. I am much happier knowing that she will graduate with very little debt but that was not the overriding factor in her decision to attend school there… Just one of many considerations.

Other than Texas State, does anyone know any other schools that give in-state tuition to OOS MT students?

I think I’ve read on here that Utah will after the first year IF you stay over the summer. Evidently by staying over the summer, your student gains resident status in the state and thus become eligible for in-state tuition. So it sees that is what most freshman do their first summer.

Coastal Carolina participates in the academic common market. We have friends whose sons are in the physical theater program there which entitles them to in-state tuition because our state has no schools that offer that degree. The boys do participate in musicals and straight plays and are taking essentially the same classes they would were they acting or MT majors. But by declaring themselves physical theater majors, they get that tuition break.
Here is a chart that shows which states participate in the academic common market:
<a href=“Southern Regional Education Board”>http://home.sreb.org/acm/states.aspx</a></p>

You would need to check and see if your state is part of this program and then check and see if your state offers a physical theater degree at any of its schools.

Several states also have reciprocity with neighboring states, which gets you to instate or very close to it. Sometimes it’s automatic and other times you have to apply for it just check out the details
