Sticker shock! Cost of attendance from financial award letters.

You do have to personalize the COA . Even room and board becomes a highly discretionary number after freshman year, I want to warn everyone. When you look at schools, take into consideration the off campus student options. Some schools are in areas where there is an active student ghetto replete with cheap rentals and an active student presence there and it’s very much the thing to go off campus after the first or second year. Yeah, my kid could not wait to give up the very nice student apartments offered on campus for upper classmen to wage turf wars with the crack dens. A bit of an exaggeration, but really, the housing was abysmal but pigs like their styes, I guess. But cheap.

But if your kid goes to school in some areas, where the off campus choices are way up there, and not much at all at a decent price, and the on campus upperclassmen housing is expensive too, that is a factor of consideration if your budget is tight. We have found that the upperclassmen housing tends to be much pricier than the standard freshman double dorm rooms that are typical for the first year, since they often are in suite style and apartment configurations. We took a hit several times with our kids that second year because of that. Not only do the list prices go up year to year, the type of housing is simply more expensive for the older students. So what’s out there off campus and if a number of kids do go out there and get their own places for low prices, that can be a significant savings. I can attest that cities like Buffalo have a lot of cheap housing and active student ghettos, for instance, and a lot of kids do this so it’s not like they are down and out doing so. Just practicing for their real world transition, heh, heh.

Those are good points that housing costs and food costs could change over the 4 years if your student moves off campus. My MT kid who attended NYU, went off the meal plan after freshman year and moved off campus after sophomore year. However, we gave her the same housing and food budget to use for off campus that on campus had cost, and so our costs remained the same.

“pigs like their styes” lol!

There is no one correct way to use the information everyone has so generously provided. It has been listed in 2 ways for that very reason. those who just want to compare direct costs should use the DC figures. those who want to include estimated expenses in their comparisons should use the TC figures. hopefully you can find the information you need. Use the chart as you best see fit. And just be cautioned to wait until your financial award letters arrive after being accepted to determine what your actual cost of attending each school will be.

Ok woops. I pretty much suck at being thorough on these cut and paste threads but I think I’ve got it now in both the alphabetical as well as in order of expense sections. NYU is still the most expensive by tc cost. I’m starting up a collection and thank you all in advance for your generous contributions. ;-). Housing. It will always be the deal breaker. You can do it for way less which will close the gap between NYU and other schools in that range but assume you can’t count on it until you know the lay of the land.

^ RCS: BA program is only 3 years. Figure does not include international travel costs.

This is a very informative list. A couple of minor comments --

Temple quote above $31,870 tc has to be for in-state. Out of state tuition alone for Temple is $24,722.00, and housing alone ranges from $7000/year to $12,000/year. This excludes meals, travel and other costs. Anyone going to Temple oos care to chime in?

Also, bear in mind the UK school costs vary a great deal depending on the current exchange rate. Make sure to budget in a range should you consider UK schools. The RCS quote above also excludes other costs such as travel, visa, insurance, etc. It still can be the same or cheaper than many US schools but make sure to budget.

To follow up on the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) information-- This is what we received from the school:

**Keep in mind that this is a 3-year program to receive a BA degree.

Tuition fees - £14,547 = $24,916

Living costs - £7,500 = $12,846 (Lodging & food)
Transportation - £1,500 = $2,569
Course related - £500= $856
Miscellaneous - £500= $856

TOTAL - £24,547 = $42,045

Visa Application (good for all 3 years) - $527
Health insurance and prescriptions are free for students, after registering with a GP and pharmacist.
This year’s American MT students received a small scholarship (several thousand GBP, good all 3 years).

A student can stay (if accepted) 1 more year (2 summers and 1 academic year) to receive a Master’s Degree.

(One of this year’s Acting graduates was just cast in the new Star Wars movie!)

@su88bfa Can overseas students use their financial aid (FAFSA) or US student loans when attending in the UK?

@MTmom2015 - My husband dealt with all of the financials, but I’m 99% sure the answer is Yes-- at least for RCS (can’t say for sure for all UK schools). I know when he was filling out FAFSA, RCS came up as a school he sent our info to. US loans are good to use there, too.

A bit more RCS info: The 3 year MT program does not include summers. They’re on a trimester and start mid-Sept and end mid-June. The kids get 3 weeks off over Christmas break, and 2 weeks spring break at the beginning of April. There are little to no “Gen Ed” classes. “Freshers” do not perform their first year. (Maybe some ensemble work if its a large cast.) There is no food plan in the privately-owned (not by RCS) dorm.

Yes, you can use FAFSA for many UK schools. My own son is going to LAMDA and we will be paying in large part through student loans and Parent Plus loans. Royal Welsh also uses FAFSA. RADA does not at this point.

If you are interested in UK schools and need loans, I would suggest you double check which ones accept FAFSA beforehand. Guildhall and Central are two more that audition here in the states and I don’t know offhand if they accept FAFSA. It would be on each college’s web page.

My other point with the UK schools is to keep in mind that the exchange rate is not fixed so that the pound amount quote will vary in dollar amount. It’s just good to budget that.

Also, transportation (airfare plus trains, etc) will vary considerably depending on where you’re located in the US, what plane rates are, and how many times your son/daughter needs/wants to come home.

I do think UK schools can be a very excellent price for the unique training, but it’s also good to keep in mind complete costs so you’re not burned. Someone I know ended up pulling out her child and one of the factors was unexpected costs due to the exchange rates and cost of living. It’s just something to be prepared for and keep in mind. A definite plus for Glasgow is that it is certainly less expensive than London! And it’s a great city.

Overall, being able to borrow money via FAFSA helps a lot.

Our non-MT S considered UCL, Oxford and Edinburgh and IIRC at least for some schools we had to do something to demonstrate our ability to pay the entire first year tuition and fees prior to getting a student VISA, so that might also be a consideration for some. We own property in Canada, and to combat exchange fee uncertainty we put money in a Canadian bank so that everything is paid in local currency and we can move money into that account whenever the exchange rate is favorable rather than being tied to a billing schedule.

^^If you are borrowing money via FAFSA for tuition plus living expenses (currently that’s tuition of around 16,000 pounds/year plus 1000 pounds/month room/board/living expenses in London), that is considered a sufficient demonstration of ability to pay for the year. The college writes a CAS letter and you bring this to the visa office. My daughter had to do this for her year in Italy as well. Her college was paying via her scholarship for her tuition in Italy, and the college itself wrote a letter saying that she was able to pay for the year.

So to clarify: You do not need cash or savings to prove the ability to pay for the year. You can demonstrate via processed, approved loans, or a combination of the two.

Momcares, I’m curious why putting money in a Canadian bank would be beneficial for someone going to school in the UK.

@alwaysamom - rereading my post I can see why that was confusing… sorry!

What I meant was that one could start a bank account in whatever country you were going to pay tuition to minimize currency uncertainty. I was just using our Canadian situation as an example since that account allows us to pay our real estate expenses in local currency.

Okay, MomCares! If your property is anywhere near Toronto and you’re in this neck of the woods at some point, let me know!

@alwaysamom - I hope some day our paths cross, but “our” Canada is on the left coast. :)

Bumping this for those of you who are concerned about affordability.
