Scholarships & Grants

D received her merit award letter a long time ago and based on that amount alone it doesn’t look like Pace is even a remotely affordable option for us. However, I just did their Net Price Calculator using our FAFSA information and it returned a very different figure. The difference between the Merit Aid amount of which she has already been notified and the amount of “Scholarships and Grants” (also known as “gift aid”) was close to $17,000. This would seem to indicate that she might be eligible for that much in grants on top of the merit award she has been given. But there is nothing detailing these amounts at all. It’s just one very large number.

Has anyone had experience with this Net Price Calculator (or those on other college sites) to know how accurate they are? I tried calling the financial aid office and they were of less than no help. She had no idea whether it was accurate at all, nor was she able to point me to any guidelines for grant awards on their website.

I SO don’t want D to get her hopes up about this school and then not be able to afford it! She is so in love and if she gets in it is absolutely going to break my heart if we can’t let her go.

tracyvp,

With Pace and fin aid, we discovered that financial award letters kept coming through the winter (admissions cycle of 2011). This was before NPCs were readily available, but in d’s Pace file, I found her academic admission letter, with some scholarship, then her admission to honors program and honors scholarship several weeks later, then a “Pace Opportunity” grant letter received a month or so later, then an additional scholarship award from spring. Artistic acceptance came later still. I don’t know if these programs are still in force (many schools have had to reduce some of their scholarship offerings), but just wanted to share our experience.

Have you submitted FAFSA? They may still be “packaging” her. Merit and need-based awards are two different beasts, and often awarded separately and over time. And I would counsel persistence with the Fin Aid people (or admissions, or anyone else on the “school” side at Pace…we had better success when d emailed them…as she could keep nudging for an answer.)
