I am having difficulty making a decision with SMU since I was taken off the waitlist at another school. I would be pursuing a Finance major, but am not in any of the business direct programs. I heard from some that it is a bad idea to get a BBA vs a BS or BA in business which has me thinking harder about SMU. I loved the campus, but have trouble finding information about any unique opportunities within the business school or in other departments. Is it worth it to attend SMU? Help is appreciated!
Being a finance major, SMU offers one of the best programs in the country. I am an upcoming sophomore and I have already seen amazing opportunities that not many other schools offer. One of those is SMU’s Alternative Asset Management Program (http://www.cox.smu.edu/web/alternative-asset-management/aamc-overview) which usually takes about 30 students per year. Each and every one of these students is going to a top bank in either New York, Houston, etc. Also when these students go in for internships as juniors, they constantly beat out other students from top universities. For instance, one of the current seniors went to an elite boutique internship with students from UPenn Wharton, Princeton, Duke, Cornell, etc. and he was able to preform at a much higher level than them due to what he had learned at SMU. He ended up being one of the few that was offered a full time position, and he will be starting at this elite New York Boutique Bank. To be totally honest, SMU’s finance/overall business program for undergraduates is one of the best of the country, and it is starting to gain serious national prominence. Hope this helps!
