still looking for a couple of "good fit" schools

hey everyone -

i've applied to usc, ucla, ucb, and ucd... but i feel like i need to choose at least one or two more transfer options to fall back on.

i'm a virginia resident. from california, and if you haven't noticed, i'd really like to head back out there for school. i'm a freshman at virginia tech right now. the main reason i'm looking to transfer is that tech doesn't offer a neuroscience program... and their psych/bio combo isn't working out as well as i'd hoped. if at all possible, i want to be in california or arizona. if not, any school that has what i'm looking for would be fine with me.

i want a school with a really strong academic reputation... but reputation isn't nearly as important as quality. size isn't an issue, but student-faculty interaction and research opportunities are of particular concern.

stats -

hs gpa: 3.02 (thoroughly explained in my personal statement)
college gpa: 3.81
sats: 2080 / 2400
credits: 43 completed, 18 this semester

plenty of extra-curriculars, leadership, volunteer work, etc.
some work experience, but not enough to brag about.

if there's anything i've left out, please ask about it.

I think USC would be a great school for you. Have you looked into UCSF?

i actually haven't. i was told that as an oos student, it would be very difficult to get in as a transfer... more so than for any of the other uc's.

UCSF isn't for undergrads.

yeah, i know. my understanding was that ucsf has a med school program that accepts only/mostly california students... with a preference for students that spent all four years at a uc. that might not be entirely accurate, but that's more or less how they look at applicants from what i hear.

Disregard sofa's claims. He/she is almost always completely wrong.

University of Washington might be a good fit. Are you only looking for colleges in California?

USC does sound like a good fit for you and I'm almost positive you'll get in with those grades.

if i didn't get into usc or another ca school, i think i'd probably stay where i am. i'll look into university of washington.

i've also thought about pitzer or one of the other claremont colleges? it doesn't seem like there are too many other options beyond the ucs, usc, and pepperdine.

U-dub looks below your standards, with a 3.8 and many ec's you'll get in all those schools, SC looks like your best fit.

Occidental is strong in the sciences and also has many research opportunities.

thanks, i'll look at occidental. wash seemed a little TOO big.

does anyone know about the claremont colleges? i started another thread for them, but... no responses. think i'd have a shot at maybe pitzer, if not pomona?

also, does anyone know which of the uc's (ucla, ucb, ucd) i'd have the best shot at? i'm only going to be able to apply to two.

The Claremonts would be great to look at. Since you're OOS the UCs will cost you the same price making them the better value. Do UCs even take Soph transfers?

Don't know about majors offered, but CMC and Pitzer would be in range for you. Scripps if you're female.

thanks, bobby - i am seriously considering applying to pitzer.

can anyone recommend safety schools? east coast schools are newly welcome. and if it helps, i'm black/native american and female.

Occidental in CA might also be a good fit.

Wow-- this is really crazy but I'm transferring from VT for the exact same reason- it doesn't have a behavioral neuroscience program. We both have not so great HS GPAs but high SAT scores, and good college grades.

I can't say much about schools in the west, because I'm looking mostly at schools in the northeast, but Ive heard good things about U of Colorado- Boulder, and UTexas- Austin, and of course Stanford.

sorry if this is getting old, but i could REALLY use more imput (deadlines are coming up soon... you know the deal).

any more schools that would be a good fit? again, they don't have to be in california or on the west coast. i'm sure the ivies are reaches, but are there any near-ivies you guys can suggest? all input is appreciated!

um. please?
