she was being easy on the vengence (she only wished them "B"s) – at least she didn’t say may they be fated for "F"s.

Who puts an expensive laptop in a locker with no locks?

You’re kidding, right? Last I checked, stealing was a criminal offense, not light-hearted tomfoolery like TPing the trees outside of school.

I would take this quite seriously, as I’m sure will the police if/when the thieves are found.

“You’re kidding, right? Last I checked, stealing was a criminal offense, not light-hearted tomfoolery like TPing the trees outside of school.”

I was being sarcastic. Maybe it’s just me but I’d wish AIDS and CJD (human version of Mad Cow Disease) on them, not passing grades.

red963,
Some private schools may not give students the ability to lock up their items. Students may need their laptops for projects but have no way to lock them up. These private schools exist in a bubble where the idea that teenagers might steal from each other is incomprehensible. They assume, because they accept bright, affluent students, that such a thing is not possible. They refuse to acknowledge the problem or do anything for fear that the school’s reputation might be tarnished.

My school had a rigorous honor code that we all had to sign at the beginning of each year.
Well, everyone has signed the honor code so there must be no lying, cheating or stealing, right?..Wrong!

Remember when Reagan said, “Trust, but verify?”

In this case, with honor codes and all, it’s “Trust, but lock.”

And sorry, Qwerty, I missed the sarcasm. :)

Yeah I missed the sarcasm too. On CC I thought wishing them B’s was as bad as I could get! School doesn’t allow locks on lockers. So they are not lockers. Laptops are mandatory, you can’t carry them everywhere into bathroom or cafeteria, where S was when someone took it. He’s only a Jr when I said last day of school, but I think it probably was a Sr as they can bring it to college in the fall and no one will notice even the parents.

^^ What do the school’s administrators have to say about this? At a minimum it’s a very good case for them to provide lockable lockers or at least places one could lock the laptop to a solid anchor with a laptop lock (they make these anchors, just a small steel bracket, even for desks - very inexpensive). They obviously can’t state that theft there never happens.

sorry Querty, I missed your sarcasm too ( after all, some parents really may believe “after all, they’re only kids” . . .so I thought you were serious when you wrote that). I think the school should “throw the book” after the culprits . . . suspend them, expel them, etc.

I’d second the suggestion of checking to see if there is coverage if you put it on a credit card. I’d also file the police report with the serial number. And, I’d see if there is anything Apple can do to make a notation that the computer with that serial number has been stolen.

And it won’t help this problem today, but if you buy another laptop, the college student insurance is inexpensive – I think D’s was around a hundred bucks to cover $5000 worth of “stuff” – and setting up mobile me will let the data (including pictures) be backed up remotely.

Here’s an article about someone recovering their stolen mac using “Back to My Mac” - I’m assuming the OP’s son did not have this program, but it’s something to think about in the future.

[Welcome to MacNewsWorld](http://www.macnewsworld.com/story/62972.html?wlc=1276059345)

Here’s a thought, does the school have security cameras? Perhaps one that shows someone entering his locker?

I will ask about the cameras although I don’t think they have them. And, I told him we were not getting a new laptop until (well until we can afford it), but withouth lojack or something on it.

Your kid put it in an unlockable cubbie?

He deserves to have it stolen.

Hell, when I left school for the weekend, I locked everything up in my closet (like with a huge lock on the front - all my clothes, everything, even my pillow and blankets) except for my TV and fridge.

Oh and just to let everyone know, private schools typically produce worse kids than publics. I went to a private school from k-8 and they made me into a scared little ***** afraid of authority. So glad I chose to go public. I’ve kept in touch with some of the kids that went on to private high school and most were forced to go to parties (which means get high and wasted and do lots of other wierd ****) just to make friends.

Next one buy LoJack for computer. D2’s had it preloaded on the computer we gave her for graduation. Get student insurance. You can cover computer, smart phone, ipod, and all stuff. You pick the limits of coverage (ie 5,000, 6,000) and the deductible ($50, $100). It is cheap. We have it and it paid to replace D’s phone. It covers computers for theft, and damage/dropping. NSSI is who we use. You can search CC as there are 3-4 threads with info on student insurance and you don’t have to file a claim with your homeowners.

Great idea about the student insurance. S is a photographer so will be bringing expensive equipment as well to college.

My advice is to agree: buying student insurance is a MUST. We’ve used NSSI but there are others. Had a laptop screen replaced for $625 and they paid $600 no problems. I recommend never claiming a loss on homeowners because it affects your rating for years.

“My school had a rigorous honor code that we all had to sign at the beginning of each year. Well, everyone has signed the honor code so there must be no lying, cheating or stealing, right?..Wrong!”

Amen. I’m still kind of bitter about the Betsey Johnson dress stolen from the laundry room clothesline at my heavy-on-the-honor-code college. I won’t share my hopes about what happened to the dormmate who took it.

lol, hanna! :-)
