Stone Hill 3 X 2 with Notre Dame vs George Washington University

My daughter is down to her final choices for the fall of 2015 and one is the 3 X 2 with Stone Hill and Notre Dame. Does anyone have any feedback about the program? Even though it is 5 years and ND, it is a little cheaper than other schools with chemical engineering because of her merit award from Stone Hill. Her other finalist is GWU but then she is locked into mechanical or biomedical engineering and she is leaning toward chemical. The 3 X 2 gives her more flexibility in engineering. She may be a little hung up on the prestige of GWU because she would go there right out of high school as opposed to doing 3 years at Stone Hill first. Thanks for any info.

Find out how many students really finish the 3+2 program. Tulane has one with Hopkins and I don’t think many student finish the ‘2’ part of the program. My daughter looked at a couple of these programs and just decided the odds were against her and picked a school with a 4 year program. In your daughter’s case I’d be very tempted, but only if there is a track record of kids really doing the 3+2 program at Stonehill/ND.

My concern about the 3+2 programs is that it might be very difficult psychologically to go to a new school just as you’re reaching the home stretch, with all your friends and really feeling attached to your school. We didn’t really consider any of these when our kids were looking at engineering programs (so my DS ended up at one of the very few liberal arts schools that has engineering, even though he’s not sure between CS and Engineering)

Thank you to both of you. I really appreciate the info.

Stonehill’s 3+2 program is rather restrictive on what majors the student may choose at Stonehill, based on which engineering major at ND is desired (e.g. she must major in chemistry at Stonehill in order to transfer to ND chemical engineering). A 3.3 college GPA is also required to make the transfer.

GWU does allow changing major; you may want to ask them if there are any GPA or admission requirements for any of the possible majors. If not, then she just needs to make sure that her first few semester schedules work toward all of the majors that she is interested in.
