Stony Brook compared to Albany....

I am familiar with SUNY ALbany- live near it. I know it's a big school with a lot of "Long Islanders" as we call them, but I know a lot of local students commute as well. I am curious about Stony Brook. I keep reading that it is a "commuter school", and I know that that is defended by those that say "no, there are a lot who stick around over the weekend, etc..."

I am looking for someone to compare the two. Is Stony Brook more of a commuter school than Albany? Is it similar to any other SUNY as far as the Student Body concerned?

well from my personal experience at stonybrook, it is packed on the weekdays. i would say about 1/3rd of the school leaves on the weekends because there are a lot of “weekend” commuters. that still leaves 2/3rds of the school which is still a lot of kids on campus. as for ethnic makeup, i would say 60% is white, 30% is asian (including southasian), and 10% hispanic/black.
very competitive academically.

as for albany its 80% white, and 5% asian, 10% black/hispanic
big partyschool, so ive heard from friends lol

im sure either school being a large suny university, provides a good education, but u must be competitive, to be on the top

From the College Board website:

SBU - 80% of Freshman live in college housing and 53% of all undergraduates live in college housing.
UA - 98% of Freshman live in college housing and 57% of all Undergraduates live in college housing.

This of course does not deal with how many students return home on weekends.

We’re actually at 87% of our freshmen on campus this fall; up a bit from last year.
