Stony Brook or U of Rochester?

I will be starting school in Spring next year, majoring in Computer Science, entering as a transfer student. Which school do you guys think has a better Computer Science program? I'm a New York State resident and independent student. I'd like to either apply to Stanford, MIT, Harvard or Yale for grad school or try to get a nice software engineer job at a place like Google. Please kindly advise! Thank you so much for your time and consideration!

U of Rochester

Stony Brook. USNews also ranks their computer science program higher.
Both are fine schools. Be sure to consider fiances in your final choice – Stony Brook as a SUNY school might be a much more affordable option.

Oh cool. Then I guess I’ll attend whichever school gives me more financial aid. :)

Both are great schools, but I go with Stony Brook.

If money is a big issue, go to the school where your net cost is lowest. (SUNY Stony Brook will have a lower base cost before aid so take that into account)

I decided to go to Stony Brook. It has a great computer science program!

thanks for coming back to let us know, OP! what were the determining factors in your decision, OP?

I ended up not going to Stony Brook U either because they didn’t transfer my computer science credits. They wanted me to gamble: move out of my town all the way to Stony Brook, get student loans, start school, register for Computer Science (CSC) classes that I’ve ready taken before then wait two or three weeks to see if the CSC admissions committee would actually transfer my CSC credits, let me drop those classes and advance. The director of CSC admissions and the director of CSC Honors program both kept ignoring my emails from September 2013 through February 2014. There was no other way of getting a hold of them. I went to the department several times but they were never there since they don’t come in until after the semester starts! If this is how they treat their students, then no thanks! I withdrew all my classes.

So, where did you decide to go, or are you re-applying this year after a gap year? That you got into both SB and URochester indicates you should be able to get into a lot of very good colleges.

I’m sorry to hear how you were treated. :s

I got a full time job at Columbia University. I am planning on attending Columbia’s School of General Studies from fall 2015 part time since I get free tuition for up to 7 credits per semester.

wow, congratulations!

Thank you so much! You rock!

By the way, just to clarify, I was not accepted by URochester. Only accepted by Stony Brook. URochester rejected me.

Full time job at Columbia + free degree beats Stony Brook (or even URochester) by a mile!!
When you graduate, you’ll be debt free AND have excellent work experience AND a security clearance AND a valuable degree. Thousands and thousands of graduates would wish to be in your position. And since it all started in such difficult and rocky situations… CONGRATULATIONS for a job well-done.

Thank you so much, MYOS1634! They had thousands of applicants for this position at Columbia already with degrees, but for some reason, they chose me! I’m very lucky indeed! I have health insurance, paid sick leave and paid vacation, with dental and even prescription insurance with a 50K salary! I’m glad Stony Brook didn’t wok out and URochester rejected me! LOL. Thank you for your kind words and support once again!
