Is parking allowed for sophomores? I will be living on campus but I will probably need my car to get back home on weekends and some research I plan on doing. If sophomores are not allowed, what is the typical appeal process?

Just a couple of months ago I attended an open house at Stony Brook and many people were wondering the same thing. From what I understand, unless you have a job off campus or have a reason related to your religion, you will not be able to get a permit as a sophomore. I’m sure there are other compelling reasons that could justify a parking permit, but from what I understand, going home on the weekends won’t win them over. I could be wrong, but that’s the vibe that I get.

As noted, you must have a legitimate excuse. If you’re going to engage is research which requires you to travel off-site, have your sponsoring faculty back up your petition.

if I dorm at SBU as freshmen and go home every weekend. Will I be allowed to keep my car on campus?

You will not be eligible for a parking pass without a legitimate reason (job etc.). Residential freshmen are not permitted to park on campus.
