hi there
I would like to ask if anyone has received any award letters, scholarships or financial aid from stony brook yet? (please if possible specify the amounts) I've been told by my guidance counselor that I should have received it by now and that is beginning to worry me because I am in need of room and board which puts my tuition at 23k. Can anyone please enlighten me about this? If it helps my gpa is 4.0 and my sat is 1220/1900.
thank you so very much!

Why does your guidance counselor feel, you should be getting a large award from Stony Brook?

Need based aid would be based on your family finances, not your GPA and SAT scores.

Merit awards go to the top applicants at these schools.

Are you instate for Stony Brook?

If you have received your letter of acceptance from Stony Brook, you can do a few things. First, check your student portal for financial aid information. Second, make sure that your financial aid application forms are COMPLETE. Third, call the financial aid office at Stony Brook and ask.

How much aid are you needing?

I wasn’t told I would be getting a large sum but that I should be expecting some financial aid. Yes I am instate but my parents aren’t too supportive of stony brook so I just wanted to know if it would be possible to relieve them from some of the payments. My parents’ finance most likely do not qualify me for need based scholarships but I am salutatorian at my school (yes even with my incredibly low sat) so I was told it was very possible I could receive some aid. I called the financial aid office and they told me if I was eligible I should be receiving an award/ fin aid this weekend.

Just check your student portal. If you don’t hear by Tuesday, call them again. Does Stony Brook offer automatic awards for salutatorian!

thank you very much. I will call them Tuesday. I tried to research this particular scholarship but couldn’t find the exact criteria or amount awarded but I do know one could be awarded a scholarship if they are the salutatorian at their school. The financial aid office wouldn’t explain the specifics to me but simply told me to keep checking my student portal.

Are you eligible for TAP and or Pell? If yes, you will get those awards in addition to a $5500 loan. Unless you have been admitted through EOP or the Honors college which has a scholarship attached, stony brook does not meet 100% demonstrated need. Even if you have a 0 EFC, the most you would get (barring HEOP/Honors college) is
$5645 Pell
$5000 Tap
$5500 Student loan (3500 subsidized)

If you are EOP eligible (it would say so on your admissions letter) you will receive either a small EOP stipend or book stipend and some additional loans
