I recently got accepted to Stony Brook for Biology and Binghamton for Psychobiology, and I was just wondering if you all could give me your opinions about which would be the better choice for me.

I want to become a psychiatrist, which means I'll have to go to med school. I would prefer to live in a busy-ish city. I live in Albany now and I like it for the most part. I debated going to NYU, but my father and I decided that it would be too expensive since I'm going to med school. I would also like a diverse student body, friendly people, etc.

I've heard that the city of Binghamton (which I plan on visiting soon) has somewhat depressing weather and doesn't have much going for it activites-wise; while Stony Brook is a "suitcase" school (everyone goes home on the weekends) and has insufficient dorm space. Are these things true? Of course, my main priority is the educational quality and how well my undergrad school will prepare me for med school, but I'm going to have to live where ever I go. Are any of you current Binghamton students wishing to transfer, or have you had a good overall experience? Same for former/current Stony Brook students..

I believe freshmen are guaranteed to get a dorm room at both schools. The reason so many people leave the Stony Brook campus during the weekend is because it is only a ~2 hour train ride to New York City. The LIRR station is right next to the campus. Who doesn’t want to party in the Big Apple? Bing is in a more secluded area.

I would consider Stony Brook in your case. It’s a school highly known for its biological science programs and has worldwide impact. While Binghamton’s “ranked” higher, you’ll find the name of Stony Brook carries further.

That was my problem last year…I’m pre-med as well (but cardiology or pediatrics)…
I chose Stony Brook over Binghamton because:
I commute…dorming at Binghamton would have been more money
I hate cold weather
Stony Brook is extreeeemly diverse (a lot of EOP and Asian kids)
More opportunities and degrees for pre-meds…including pre-med clubs
Stony Brook is a major medical research university…so yeah
There are buses from the Student Center to the railroad to the city…it’s that easy

Note: Stony Brook isn’t perfect but then again no school is. I’m not gonna lie everyone does go home…but there are kids that stay and attend club meetings and visit the surrounding towns/malls. I’m kinda biased since I commute and I’ve lived near Stony Brook for so long…but Stony Brook is a really pretty campus and even though I really wanted to go to Binghamton I’m glad I chose SBU.

So I hope that helped
Good luck with your decision!
