Binghamton or Stony Brook?

Hi everyone,

I recently got accepted to Stony Brook for Biology and Binghamton for Psychobiology, and I was just wondering if you all could give me your opinions about which would be the better choice for me.

I want to become a psychiatrist, which means I'll have to go to med school. I would prefer to live in a busy-ish city. I live in Albany now and I like it for the most part. I debated going to NYU, but my father and I decided that it would be too expensive since I'm going to med school. I would also like a diverse student body, friendly people, etc.

I've heard that the city of Binghamton (which I plan on visiting soon) has somewhat depressing weather and doesn't have much going for it activites-wise; while Stony Brook is a "suitcase" school (everyone goes home on the weekends) and has insufficient dorm space. Are these things true? Of course, my main priority is the educational quality and how well my undergrad school will prepare me for med school, but I'm going to have to live where ever I go. Are any of you current Binghamton students wishing to transfer, or have you had a good overall experience? Same for former/current Stony Brook students..

Any help appreciated :-)

My brother is a junior at stony brook and I have a friend who is a senior at Binghamton. Both of them love college. It’s true that lots of people go home on the weekend at SB because there’s a train station right on campus. Binghamton is kind of in the middle of nowhere, but the school is really well connected and there are tons of activities to participate in. As far as educational quality, both are great, especially for the price. From my knowledge, SB is more well known for their science and mathematics departments. And SB is in a really great part of Long Island. Port Jefferson is a great place to get dinner and there are tons of spots right near campus to shop and get food. SB is kind of notorious for being not the best social scene, and from some people I have talked to they agree. But if you know where to look and are open minded you can always find something to do. It’s all based on which setting you like more and which academics suit your desires more.

OMG THIS IS A QUESTION I HAVE BEEN MEANING TO ANSWER FOR A LONGGG TIME. ok so this will be long. First off, i am on the pre-dental track with many pre-med friends. I am a transfer student from Stony Brook. I am biased, and I absolutely despised stony brook. I went their my freshmen year, I was a commuter student. I really enjoyed it in the beginning, because I was able to make friends pretty fast. BUT, i found that the general student body was very anti social, and made clicks. IT IS DEFF A SUIT case school. Even when i slept over at my friends dorm, many people would be home.

Yes, you will find people that enjoy stony brook, but overall, you will find it far more difficult to enjoy stony brook. Also, on the subject of Binghamton being cloudy, it is very cloudy. This is the schools biggest flaw. It does suck, but honestly, the people are awesome. this was the big difference of stony brook and binghamton. not only were Binghamton’s students far cooler and fun to be around, but their caliber and intelligence really was clear. I am currently taking a winter course at Stony brook, and I can clearly see the difference of Binghamton and Stony Brook. Binghamton has really pushed me to succeed. you will be surrounded by people who are not only ambitious, but know how to have fun.

After transferring to Binghamton, I saw the biggest difference. Just seing many people talking to each other and being social made me happy( things that normally happen on a campus). Both Binghamton and Stony Brook are great schools for pre-med. I was recently at a dental school interview, and a lady asked 10 of the students interviewing where we went, she didnt comment on anyone, then I said I went to Binghamton University, she was like " wow, thats a great school , especially for pre-med". i was a bit suprised, i didn’t know it was that known.haha this school was in Pennsylvania.

Deff dont go to NYu, that would be a huge mistake. its over priced, and you will just enter med school with huge debt. Plenty of people get into med/dent/pharm/ and other health professional schools from Bing and Stony.

I wrote a lot, if you have any questions please PM me.

from what i understand, stony brook is slightly better than binghamton when it comes to pre-med, however you will be much happier at binghamton and the overall academics are better.

The overall quality of social life would go to Bing. The average living and studying, making friends, and having a good time would also go to Bing. Stony has far better connections, considering there is a Long Island Rail Road inside the campus that directly leads to the City, so as previous posters have said, many people are in and out. I did a campus tour to Bing because my brother had to choose between Bing and Geneseo, but I would say the buildings at Bing along with its dorms aren’t really technical and advanced.

Academically, Bing would be better in overall, but pre-med wise I would stay with Stony. But beware Stony is a party school.

It simply does not matter where you go for Pre-med; so long as you do exceptionally well wherever you are and do just as well on the MCATS. Binghamton and Stony are both great schools, but do not choose a school based on the rankings of some website. I personally have attended both schools and it simply comes down to taste. College (despite its importance of preparation for a career or simply attaining a degree) is meant to be fun and comfortable along the way. If you aren’t happy where you are, your overall morale/standing in life will ultimately affect your grades. Don’t worry about what others tell you, just go with your gut and stay true to yourself, and good luck! That’s life.
