Stopping Foreign Language After Sophomore Year?

Does it matter when you stop taking a foreign language, as long as you have three years of it? For example, is it better to finish your third year junior year, or is it OK to finish it sophomore year, and not take any more classes during junior or senior year? I'm asking for how colleges would look at this when evaluating my transcript.

Try to take a higher level course (Maybe AP or local college course)

Depends on the college, I would say. Also what you are planning to major in would matter as well. I dropped halfway through my junior year because of problems with the teacher, but I would have kept going if I could have. If you don’t have any reason not to take it, then you should do it! It will look good that you stuck with it.

I did it. I stopped second semester sophomore year. I was already at the highest level available though (Spanish 4) other than AP (which I couldn’t do because I was unprepared because of the bad teacher I had in Spanish 3). Come to find out, admissions officers don’t count middle school credits. -_- (And it’s too late now because I’m a senior.) Learn from my mistake and take either the next highest level or take a new language.

I stopped mid way in junior year in spanish 4 although it was the same class as AP…I just wasn’t at the fluent level.

It’s ok to stop at your sophomore year, but if you can continue doing it, by all means, continue.

Up until the end of sophomore year I was taking two languages (Spanish and Hebrew), it was too much so I dropped the one I was at a lower level in (Spanish) and now only take one language. You should try and stick with your language for at least one more year, it looks bad on your transcript if you quit so early.

Even though I’ve still done three years? My school’s on the block system, so I did 1 and 2 last year, and I figured I’d finish up with 3 this year. But now I’m not so sure. GAH

You’re ok with three years. Stopping at level III in your sophomore year is not bad. If you’re using the open space from not taking that class for something better then by all means do it.

It doesn’t make a transcript look bad. College don’t look at a transcript and say, “Oh, if they took this their transcript would’ve looked so much better. But they didn’t. This is a bad transcript.” -___-

@tigers: First you have to weigh the reasons why you want to quit with the reasons why you shouldn’t quit. Are you taking a more advanced class (AP) at the expense of your foreign language? If so, then I don’t see a problem. But if you’re just tired with your language and are taking like PE or Woodshop or something, then I HIGHLY advise against it. I would say continue with the language if you are in the latter boat.

At this point, it looks like it’ll come down to AP Environmental Science versus Spanish 4. I have an equal desire to take both classes, but I don’t know…

Look. Unless you’ll end up with some big benefit, like fluency, by taking Spanish 4, take Enviro Sci. It’s AP, for heaven’s sake. College credits. Colleges love APs, and parents love $87 college credits :).

I did.
Because I’m taking AP Chemistry, Spanish IV doesn’t fit in my schedule this year, but I’m going to try my best to take it senior year. I’d say take Spanish, but if you really want to take AP Enviro, take it.

I took my final Italian class last year (junior year, Italian III). I’m also taking AP Economics instead though, so it’s not as much as a detriment, if it was in the first place. I’m going into STEM, so foreign language isn’t essential anyway.
