I know we've discussed storage before, but now that my son is finishing his freshman year and we're dealing with the real thing, it's not as easy as we thought. Most of my son's friends are freshmen without cars. He's got the name of a good storage facility, but he's scrambling to find a way to get his stuff there. Some of the dorms rent a trailer and will store stuff over the summer for a fee. The Student Activities Office said that DS could go in with one of the dorms that do this, but their web site said that they pick up stuff on April 26 which leaves DS without his stuff for two weeks. We're West Coasters and it just seems that students who live that far away shouldn't have to work this hard to store stuff. How are other distant folks managing this?

If I use storage, I will either use the dorm service or perhaps even have my dad bring the stuff to a facility off campus. But if you aren't picking your son up by car, then that isn't really an option...

Maybe ask around the dorm for help from someone with a car? Seniors have taken people on trips to Salvation Army for things in the past, maybe they can help out with storage too.

Thanks Kid. We aren't picking him up by car. He's flying out of Chicago on May 10th. I guess he'll just have to beg for a ride to the storage facility.

Hi 4mom,
Yeah, I'm from the west coast too, so I experienced similar things. Maybe your son could call a cab (like a minivan cab) to take him to/from storage. Also, mailing is a great option. For probably 100 bucks or so, you could mail stuff via UPS. I also know that some of the California alum clubs will charter trucks to take stuff to the west coast, so check into this also...Just some ideas.

Just tell his RA, they'll take care of getting a ride to a storage place. It's not a big deal, everyone does it.

Thank you Princess and BPayne, some very good ideas. I'll have DS look into them.
