Storage

My son will be at Florida State and has to attend summer school. He will change dorms for the Fall. Any suggestions or experience on where to store his “room” in between as we are from NJ.

We live a long way from our daughter’s college. We rented a storage unit near her school, about 175 bucks for 4 months. She doesn’t have a car, but got help from a friend moving her stuff there. We were with her for move in and it was super convenient judt picking up her stuff a few blocks from her dorm in a couple of car loads.

I found a storage unit local to my student via the U-Haul website. Paid for it online and she found 2 other students to share it to bring the cost down. She rented the on campus zipcar to schlep her stuff a few miles down the road. We flew up to school in the fall to help her move back in the dorm. We are planning to store long term with the same place this summer and next school year for study abroad.

When we moved her back in we met another family from our area who drove the 1000 miles to move their student out of the dorm, stored the stuff in the garage and then drove it 1000 miles back to school. They were kicking themselves for not just getting a storage unit.

One of my kids rented a storage unit acrosss the country. She did this with three friends, and there was PLENTY of room for everyone’s stuff.

There is a company also that does storage. They pick up and deliver. It’s more expensive…but both of my kids’ college campuses had this available to them.

Once your son gets there, he should be able to find this info.

The UPS store on the FSU campus has a service you can pay to have your belongings stored for the summer break. They will drop the boxes and packaging tape off at your dorm for you to pack at your leisure and you arrange a time to have them picked up. At the end of summer they will deliver the stored boxes to wherever you select and they allow you to pick a two hour window for when they drop it off. We used it last year and it worked perfectly.

Here is the brochure listing prices from last summer, haven’t seen the price list for this summer yet. https://obs.fsu.edu/sites/default/files/media/doc/summer_brochure_inside_2017.pdf

The UPS Store on campus will allow you to store stuff there, but it can get pricey if you need to store more than a box or two.

Some buildings, if you can prove you’ll be moving into the building in the fall, may allow you to store some items in the building at the end of summer. They used to, at least, so I’m not sure if they still do.
