FSU Summer Storage? Cars?

My youngest will be heading off to school soon and is very interested in FSU. My older two went to school within driving distance. We're in CT, one went to school in PA and the other in MA. Tallahassee isn't nearly as easy a drive from CT as the others!

Maybe it's premature to even worry about it, but what do people do in instances like this? Suck it up and drive down in the summers and fall at move in and move out, or are short term storage areas available? Being a boy, he'll have a LOT less than then when my daughter headed off to school (wow did she have stuff!), but it'll still be a bit.

Secondly... We were told on the tour that there are no restrictions on Freshman having cars on campus but when he was down there he questioned weather or not he would even need one? The on campus buses seemed decent and MANY people used bikes. Plus your student ID gets you on and off the town bus. I can see if he was a Florida resident and wanted to drive home the occasional weekend, but traveling home for him will entail a flight. From what we could see, outside Tallahassee, there wasn't much he'd be needing or wanting to travel to regularly anyway?

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance...

Cars are a luxury/convenience, but a freshman especially does not need a car. Most freshman live on campus. Less sophomores and even less juniors and seniors live on campus. So after a year or two in a dorm, most are in apartments that are leased year round, so the stuff stays in the apartment. There are storage options, storage places, and the local UPS store has a great storage plan. For one price based on box size, they drop off boxes/tape to you, you pack, they pick up the boxes based on an appointment time you make. They store them for the summer, then they deliver them back to you in fall based on an appointment time you set up before you head back.

Once he gets on campus, by spring he will be making plans for fall housing and that will help determine what storage needs he has. And students get together and rent small storage areas at the local U-Store type places.

Also, if he is accepted for summer, he can leave 2 boxes in the basement of the summer dorm to pick up for fall move in. He just has to ask at the desk when he is there for summer. Dorms close after summer and reopen for fall, and you are not in the same dorm or room for both. But you can store stuff that one time at the dorm.

Thanks! Wasn’t sure how this all worked. The UPS deal makes a good deal of sense and I’m sure once he makes friends on campus this will all work itself out. The dorms themselves seem pretty well equipped so it should just be a mess of clothes and personal items.

As for living off campus… are apartments in the area generally furnished or do groups who rent an apartment together just go hit craigs list and furnish / un-furnish as need change?
