I could go into detail, but people would... just don't worry obuat it and take it for what it is
but, theres another reason i can do well this year
I lucked out this year.
I have realllly lenient teachers, I can turn in late work, in History i can turn assignments into my teachers home mailbox by 8 at night the day its due. Its just... Well with ap physics chem us english... I should be doing a lot more work than I am doing.

All I do is homework and study

First of all, homework is easy grade inflation. Do it at all costs - on the train/bus/car, in lunch, in another, usually slack class, or even in class while the teacher is checking other people's homework.

Second of all, read the books carefully. I personally find it easier to retain stuff if I take notes. Also, see if ur textbook has a website. That may often have powerpoints or outlines already made, if u need it in a cinch. Get ur friends to quiz u before the test.

One thing I do is know my teacher's testing styles, as in what types of questions they generally put on their tests. For example, I have an English teacher who will ask the most random, obscure crap after giving like 50 pages of reading in a night, like what color shoelaces a minor character was wearing. So when I take notes as I read the book, I mostly record the really random obscure stuff. Sparknotes is good enough for the basic plot outline.

Congrats to whoever started this thread! You have opened a gold mine for every1 to share their secrets. Now all of us will get better grades!!!

I have a 4.0, I play varsity field hockey, play the cello at a youth conservatory and am involved in Key Club, FBLA, NHS, Mock Trial, and am currently taking 7 AP courses. This is how it gets done:

I go to school, and during time between classes, I do whatever homework I can. After school, I'm always at practice or involved with club activities, and then I get home around 6 or 7 pm. The homework starts around 8, after dinner, while I'm simultaneously on AIM/Myspace/Gmail. The homework doesn't usually end until 4 AM, which is when I go to sleep. I've been doing this for over a year now, and seem to have built up immunity to the horrible effects of lack of sleep. If I accidentally fall asleep and wake up panicking, I do homework frantically in the car or on the bus. I never resort to cheating, since I think that's just freakin pathetic. I'm probably not the best example as far as time management goes, but it works out in the end. On weekends I volunteer pretty much all day long, and manage to chill whenever possible. This may include a quick hang at the movies when a meeting ends early, or shopping with my friends on Friday nights. My boyfriend and I also manage to keep a great relationship going and we have sex when we study together, which is a lot.

Don't know if these habits are going to be good enough to get me into Stanford or not, but we'll see.

^That's what you get when you get in over your head. You probably could have better time management by doing the homework over the weekends.

Sometimes I can get some done over the weekend, but I'm usually too tired. Figures. When you get an average of 12 hours of sleep per school week, that's what happens.

omg i'm so happy i found this post, i've ALWAYS wondered how the hell ppl get straight A's, have 43598340593 extracurriculars, 900 volunteer hours and still have a social life, but have been to shy to ask........i haven't finished reading all of the responses, i only went up to the second page and have already concluded that wasting time on the internet instead of doing hw is a big nono lol <3333 but yay for strangers giving out the secret to...life? oh wait one question that i don't know if answered or not: memory. do you guys have naturally great memory? because for me, (I used to be a straight-A student, i forgot how I did it, but all i know is one teacher gave me a C and ruined me and the rest of my high school career) but anyway it seems like i take too long to retain information and understand it...i always find myself having to teach myself out of the book because i get lost during class; also, it takes me more time to memorize stuff, and vocab, i study it but can never recall words fast enough when writing on-demand, timed essays....would you guys agree you have a naturally great memory, allowing you to spend less time doing stuff/get more stuff done?

sometimes, it is good to have good memory, but people even without a good one can get straight A's.
- Do homework at all costs!
- take practice tests to learn the material
- make sure you know what you are doing well (I mean well)

You might have a learning disorder silentiggulz. A friend of mine was having a very tough time trying to retain what he learned. He struggled with it for years, but he eventually went to a doctor about and found out that he has a learning disorder. He got some medication and is perfectly peachy now.

My problem is that I can't focus. For example, it takes me forever to get something done and I fall asleep way too fast and end up waking at like 4 am only to go back to sleep an hour later :(

I'm glad the thread helped you guys. It definitely helped me! With so many bright, and smart students surfing CC we should at least learn how they do it. :P

yeah i might have adhd lol......

memory can always be improved. Maybe your methods or enviornment is wrong. Evaluate your position and think of ways it can improve? Is there too much noise where you study? Are you concentrating when you study?

A great guide someone suggested was at Pinkmonkey.com , check it out, it has great memory strategies.

Unfortunately, I think a lot of it's natural. I always got straight A's, had a part-time job, and did tons of extracurriculars, and my work habits are absolutely horrible (although that's changing now that I'm in college). But I would agree that it helps to JUST DO THE WORK. A lot of the people I saw at my high school really struggling with their grades were the people who would just not do things. Homework- regular, boring, by-the-book homework- can really bring your grade up. Also, if you don't get something, don't be too proud/scared to get help. Better to go in for a little extra work than to continue getting that math formula wrong every time you use it.

My senior-year schedule was actually really good for getting work done- I had two classes from 7:30-9 most days, then a college class nearby from 9:20-10:30, then free time until 12:45, when I had two more high-school classes. The best place to get my homework done was in school in my study halls (or in other classes...shhh, this is a bad idea, unless you really don't need to pay attention), or during breaks in my extracurriculars (i.e. on the Speech and Debate bus every Saturday).

For college classes, the key is to do the reading and LISTEN in class (rather than taking tons of notes and possible missing things). This probably applies to high school classes as well.

Doing well in school is definitely not natural. All you have to do is do the work and review the work each day. As you said, it just takes good time management and commitment.

College may be a different thing, because they may score different etc, but high school is simple, and I don't think you need any natural talent to pass multiple choice exams or do a formulaic 5-paragraph essay.

Time management & finding time...like, I am always doing something. Like, I read /study during homeroom, on the bus, waiting for pics to load in yearbook, lines, hallways, etc. You'd be surprised how much time you waste just "sitting there"!

Also, use your time wisely! I also have a little strategy that's best if you're in a "ehhh i have so much to do...I don't want to start anything", do the thing that is the due the latest, and work back to the things due like tommorow. This is really effective for me---I get the longterm projects done and the shortterm without having to keep re-motivating myself.

I do a lot of work
But i am always absent minded.I always think bad behaviour of other people about me and my other social and financial problems
These habits has ruined my grades
please tell me how i can ovrcome these problems

That is a really good idea -- I think I'll start doing that. In fact, I think I'll go do it right now...

haha well, my way of procrastinating is to do all the easy homework first and then move on to the hard. Usually it's math or science i work with first since i like those subjects. Getting a 4.0 is not impossible but it takes alot of hard work. You just have to really want it i guess. I HAVE to get 4.0's or i don't leave the house lol. I think one time i got a 3.95 because of an A- and this was in middle school, i was grounded for like 3 months and christmas was hell... haha yeah so i guess i was motivated by force.. which sucks.. but yeah good luck to you on that :)

please give me idea
