US News is the only list in the world that says uci is better. every other ranking says otherwise.

One friend argues that US News is the best and most reliable source and what US News says must be true. AND that other sources are generic. my rebuttal is that as "unreliable" as these other sources are claimed to be, they all say the same thing. isn't it odd that one would point out and say "any one who disagrees with me is a liar"? Thats the same for saying that every other source is unreliable. Just because they do not agree with your beliefs does not make it unreliable.
He also argues that US News has done better research on ranking schools. But can anyone prove the research done is better than the research done by the highly regarded Washington Monthly or Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a top research university in China? I would also like to point out that US News is a Publishing company and not a research university. How well can a broad casting news company be commited to the truth? We often see the news on TV that distorts the facts. AND although I'm not claiming US NEWS does this but one would think university research is a more reliable source.

However, One thing is certain: Each ranking is done differently. SO if one school ALWAYS comes out higher than another school when ranked in MANY different ways and different criteria. The findings are likely to be more reliable THAN one ranking based on only one criteria.

if you do not agree, please send me a good resonable rebuttal to everything i said. your feelings and unsupported perspective does not matter. only rational reasoning with evidence can prove me wrong. ]:O. Anything thats starts with words such as " I Think" or " I Believe " are invalid and please do not state any facts unless u can prove it. These include " UCI is better academically because US News said so" BUT the point is if can you actually prove what US NEWs says still holds truth when so many other rankings sare against it?

and although i can't say for sure that UCD is better than UCI. there is no solid proof that UCI is better. US News is not solid proof because EVERY OTHER RANKING in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD AGREES THAT UCD > UCI . just because its popular doesnt make it right. i rest my case.

Why Davis rocks:
1. amazing college town environment (so much fun stuff to do in walking distance) with a gorgeous, clean campus.
2. parties (great frat, sorority life)
3. one of the biggest intramural programs in the nation
4. one of the biggest internship programs in the nation
5. only UC with all five graduate schools
6. has the most room to expand (owns the most land) of any UC
7. 26 D1 sports programs (the most of any UC)
8. number 1 vet school in the nation
9. the only UC with tractor driving and wine and beer making for undergrad lower division courses
10. close proximity to many fun places (tahoe, bay area, sacramento, beach)
11. house boating (most fun thing you will ever do!)
12. biking (best bike town in the country)
13. great places to eat everywhere and all in walking distance
14. agressive and awsome plans for the future (smart planning) for instance plans to become headquarters for global wine and food innovator
15. oh and of course football (go Ags!)

While UCI is ranked higher, most of the UCs are so close together, that it really doesnt matter too much.

I chose UCI (a Nor-cal'er and white male), but it was a tough decision. UCD definitely has a nice college-town feel and a football team both of which UCI lack, for now...... But I was looking for a change and could sense UCI was experiencing rapid growth and I wanted to be a part of that.

Both are great schools and I am sure I would have been just as satisfied at UCD.

Hope this helps. (although it probably just added to your confusion)

Remember that the capital of CA is Sacramento. If you want to see CA politics in action, Sacramento is much closer to Davis than Irvine. Of course, don't know much about the faculty at the two schools & how they compare in poli sci.

downtown sac where the state capital is located is 12 minutes from Davis. there are many internships at the capital for ucd students. there is even a specialized program where you can live and work right next to the capital. go check out the ucd poly sci. web site.

According to Politicalstudies.org, UCI has a significantly higher ranked Poly Science program. UCI was ranked 7 in the US while UCD was 48. The ranking methodology is explained on that site and the ranking are on it as well.

So it's Irvine's program or Davis' location that gives each its own edge.

I was a Poli Sci Major at UCI and until I read the post above, I had no idea that UCI's ranking is that high.

UCI had a great program, but I am sure UCD's is just as good with very good professors.

If you are that interested in Poli Sci, contact professors at both schools and look at the catalogues. Maybe the schools offer differ courses and one school might be more appealing to you. Whatever school you choose, I highly recommend the UCDC program. You can intern in DC and get credits for it.

I wouldn't take those rankings too seriously, they are grad school rankings, probably won't affect your learning experience that much IMO. I still say go to the school that you feel more comfortable at/like more if you're going between UCD and UCI. btw, I'm a polisci major at UCI and like it.

UCI has the UC program in Sacramento too where you live there for a quarter. Of course if you really are into the state government then I'd lean towards UCD because you might be able to make more connections there, idunno. As for me, I'm not into state politics at all.

The rankings are for grad school only. How many times does this need to be repeated? California is the 7th largest economy in the world so state govt. is a very useful experience.

There's nothing like visiting both schools (assuming you're admitted to both) & choosing from how you FEEL at each. The schools are quite different environments and not really "interchangeable." I loved the college town of Davis, but not everyone likes it. I've never been to Irvine, but would try to visit if I were thinking of attending it.

The Washington Monthly College Rankings ranks UC Riverside higher than UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine and UC Santa Cruz. Interesting! I never knew UCR > UCI?!
