UCI or UCD?

I am currently at a fork in the road and to make a long story short, would you suggest going to Irvine or Davis? What are your thoughts? I am planning on taking up aeronautics engineering or physics.

Here are things to consider:
Davis–
I have friends already there and also close friends planning to go there
Near home

Irvine–
Superior academics (?)
I am concerned about Irvine being a “commuter school” where many students go home for the weekend
Same laid-back atmosphere as Davis

Thanks!

If you want a true college experience where you really start anew, then I would choose Irvine, simply because it forces you to make friends and experience college as a time to meet new people. For your major, I'd say that Irvine is a better choice because Davis is ranked for Biological Sciences and Irvine has a decent engineering school.

It's understandable, though, if Davis is a better choice because most people will be home sick, and it's always nice to have friends at a school to make it all the less difficult to transition. The discrepancy in school rankings isn't that large, so I don't see anything in terms of "superior academics" on Irvine's part.

Davis because you have a lot of friends there.

Besides, Davis has a better reputation.

UC Davis because it would be the right decision ;-)

UCI definitely cannot play the superior academics card on UCD - don't worry about that. The commuter campus thing scared me off quickly when I was applying to UC's last year - I didn't even apply to UCI.

If you want the best combination of a true (Aggie) blue college town, strong academics, and a chill environment, come to UC Davis. I'd be more than happy to try to answer any other questions.

I say UC Davis, cause we have real California cows. Hence the good cheese here.

Seriously, its up to you. Looks like you already know what the two schools have to offer and have listed the factors most important to you. Bottom line is: make the decision on your own. Only you know what you want the most in a college. Also, why would you expect an unbiased response in the UC Davis forums -_-

^Come to think, I think I should have set this thread up in a "neutral" forum like UC Santa Barbara or something lol. Ah well. Thanks for the posts anyway. Keep them coming.

This survey has BIAS!!!! Posting this in the UCD section.... shame on you lol.....seriously post this "college selection" or "UC GENERAL" so you can see all the views.

Hey Nagare,
Here's my opinion (and i'm in the same boat as you)
For me Davis is only about two hours away, while Irvine is about 6.
Putting the distance from home aside, I would say that academically Irvine would be the better suit for you if you were sure that you were going to major in some kind of engineering. Otherwise, Davis is still the superior school, although im not so sure about their engineering program. If you have friends at Davis already that may be a plus too. But, I would say that the location of Irvine is better because I'm more of a city person, and for me Davis is a little bit too isolated. Also you get palm trees instead of corn fields=)

dude quikslvr45 has obviously never been to davis....so ignore him. at UCD you get a school that is fun and the students actually live there. at UCI you get a commuter school with no parties stuck in the middle of suburbia where everything shuts down at 10:00. davis is a college town and there is always a huge choice of stuff to do ie., the ARC, biggest intramural and internship programs in the nation, the Mondavi center, great greek system right on the edge of campus, great parties and hot girls. davis has a huge engineering program, and it is very well respected. there are plenty of high tech companies near by to do internships and gain needed experience. UCD has D1 sports and is on the rise.....most importantly of all at davis you get the aggie pack and FOOTBALL in our brand new kick butt football stadium. go to davis. you will never regret your choice, you will be too busy getting a top education AND having a blast.

i've passed by davis and the surroundings kinda suck.

i've been in uci however along with the surrounding enviorment, and it's nicer than the short glimpses i've seen of davis.

i'll definitely visit davis though before i make a decision.

nagare, you need to visit both schools or at least think about what you prefer in a school to make a decision.

Pepers and quikslvr45, you're both wrong. It doesn't look like you two know too much about UC Davis.

Davis has the superior reputation over Irvine in BOTH science and engineering. Whoever told you Irvine was better than Davis in engineering is flat out wrong.

Davis has higher rankings over Irvine in ALL engineering disciplines.

Davis has a HUGE engineering department and one of the largest engineering student population in the UC system. Science (bio) and engineering are 2 of UC Davis's strongest and most notable fields. I'm not even sure what UC Irvine is even distinguished for. Their science and engineering programs are decent, but they are nowhere on the same level as Davis. Davis is trying to catch up to UCSD in both science and engineering while UCI is trying to catch up to UCD in both these fields.

Aeronatical engineering:
Davis ranks #22
Irvine ranks #27

Biomedical engineering:
Davis ranks #21
Irvine ranks #39

Chemical engineering:
Davis ranks #27
Irvine ranks #54

Civil Engineering:
Davis ranks #17
Irvine ranks #24

Computer Engineering:
Davis ranks #34
Irvine ranks #34

Electrical Engineering:
Davis ranks #33
Irvine ranks #42

Environmental Engineering:
Davis ranks #13
Irvine ranks #34

Materials Engineering:
Davis ranks #28
Irvine ranks #45

Mechanical Engineering:
Davis ranks #28
Irvine ranks #36

source for the data above?

source: US News Premium Online Edition

UC Davis is the 17th best engineering school among public universities in the nation.

http://engineering.ucdavis.edu/pages/about/index.html

8,346 out of 23,458 total undergraduate students at UC Davis are either in a bio-related major or engineering major, so that means 1 out of every 3 Davis students is either a scientist or an engineer.

The Brian if you like huge shopping malls in the middle of suburbia (some dudes like to shop) than go to Irvine...if you want a superior college experience in every other way choose Davis. If you really are a big mall shopper we do have big malls 13 minutes up the freeway in Sac. Go Ags!

i don't know what you can do at davis.

i live in norcal so i want to move down to socal; it's one of the main reasons i'd go to irvine over davis.

i was in the same damn position you are in last year. i'm from norcal and i alwasy thought i would go to davis since it's a little closer to home. it was a hard choice, and 5 minutes before deadline i chose UCI. best decision of my life.

The Brian you have never even visited davis dude. if you're from nor cal i'm sure you have friends at ucd so visit and see for yourself before you choose uci.... that would be the worst decision of your life. i'm from nor cal dude, hella.

and visit uci on a weekend. do you like ddr?

no, i don't like ddr.

All I know is I'm tired of the suburban sprawl, so socal is probably not for me. I plan on checking out both, but right now I'm leaning towards davis.
